Welcome to our new look newsletter! There are a lot of exciting new changes at Carers in Mind and our new newsletter is one of them! In this edition we will be welcoming John Elkin, our new Carers in Mind Project Manager, taking a look at the refreshed carers strategy, and sharing recent survey information. Plus we have the regular dates for your diary feature
Welcome to John Elkin
"I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to manage Carers in Mind as the project team were incredibly supportive of my wife and sister a number of years ago when my family were helping me manage my depression. Unpaid carers have an incredibly challenging job and being part of the future of this project makes me feel like I’m able to give something back to RB Mind who were there for my family carers when we needed them, it’s an invaluable service.
Most of my working life has been in the magazine publishing and media industry, firstly in advertising and then moving into publishing, online and project and account management. I also have experience of being a corporate fundraiser for Age UK and for the past two and half years I have been managing a variety of projects for the Richmond borough based user-led disability charity Ruils. It’s gratifying to be able to transfer skills developed in the private sector into the voluntary world, particularly in the borough that I’ve called home for over 20 years.”
Carers Survey Results

Carers Strategy Refresh
The refreshed carers strategy is out to consultation until Friday 29th July https://consultation.richmond.gov.uk/jcc/carers so hurry to get your comments and feedback in. The refresh builds upon the original strategy and outlines 4 Key priorities
  • Indentification and Recognition
  • Realising and Releasing Potential
  • A Life outside Caring
  • Supporting Carers to stay healthy
The strategy recognises the importance of the Acute Carers Recovery Worker & a commitment to ‘continue to fund services that support carers in decision-making about the person they care for in an acute mental health setting.’ We are delighted that the funding for this role has been extended until March 2017

The strategy also highlights that ‘Commissioners will work with providers to ensure that respite services develop transparent unit costs and are available to everyone, including self-funders, people who wish us to arrange services on their behalf and those in receipt of direct payments’. As you will be aware Carers in Mind have revised their budget so that now we now working to a fixed price per head for Christmas lunches and outing. However, please remember that there is a bursary for those who feel that the cost may prohibit them from taking part. Please speak to one of the Carers in Mind team if you would like to access the bursary

June Carers' Lunch Workshop Recap - Managing Worry
The presentation in June that followed the carers' Lunch was on worry. Emily Gardner from the Richmond Wellbeing Service, spoke about distinguishing worry into two types: practical worries and hypothetical worries.
To help make the distinction between the types of worry you can ask yourself;
  • Has the worry happened yet?
  • Is there a practical solution right now?
  • Would other people act on this worry?
Emily suggested creating your own ‘worry time’. This is a set time, place, and length of time to do all of your worrying. She then introduced the ‘worry plan’ below:
The Richmond Wellbeing Service offers a range of free and confidential talking therapies and specialist support to help you feel better. To find out more visit https://www.richmondwellbeingservice.nhs.uk/
