SHASTA BULLETIN  •   JULY 2016

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTORS

Dear Shasta Families,

Happy summer!  Today marks the end of Summer of Summit and an incredible moment of learning for the many, many students who attended over the last four weeks.  The campus was buzzing with learning for all.  If this summer is any indication of what the school year will be like, we are all in for a treat.  This is one incredible community poised for greatness.

As you learned in our summer mailing, we are incredibly excited about the upcoming school year. Over the coming weeks we will keep you up to date with need to know information including introductions to our new faculty members, school year events, updates to the schedule, and progress on our campus expansion and beautification.

Here's to a wonderful school year!

Best,
Caitlyn & Wren

save the date: annual shasta camping trip

Save the date to join us on our annual fall tradition: The School-wide Camping Trip! We have reserved a new larger campsite this year (Boulder Creek Scout Reservation) and we will hold our camping trip on Mon-Tues August 22nd and 23rd. The dates are slightly earlier this year due to Expeditions #1 falling early along with other constraints, but we are excited to have access to a large campground with a hiking trail and large amphitheater with lots of seating!

11th grade parents Ofelia Lee (2leeboys@sbcglobal.net) and Christina Solomon (solomonboys@sbcglobal.net) will lead the parent team to coordinate food. Reach out to them if you are interested in helping.

If you are interested in volunteering to drive and/or chaperone, please return the forms included in your summer mailer.
sports and clubs 2016-2017

At Summit Shasta we are excited to offer many sports and clubs.  This year we look forward to having a more established and organized program.  Information on sports and clubs will be kept on our school calendar and updated regularly.  Please check out the website for more information and to add the sports calendar to your Google account.

Where do I go to check out information on upcoming events?
sports: Shasta.summitps.org/athletics (click for more information)
clubs: shasta.summitps.org/clubs (click for more information)

What do I need to do to sign up for sports or clubs?
sports: On August 16 Ms. Herman will hold an orientation meeting at lunch for all sports and all seasons to go over the sports program, hand out paperwork and to introduce our norms around participation.  Students interested in joining a sports team must attend the meeting.
clubs: Our HCC teachers will help coordinate a club fair at the beginning of the school year.  During this club fair students may sign up for clubs they are interested in joining.  Meetings will begin shortly after the club fair.  A list of clubs for the 2016-2017 school year will be available for review at Personalized Learning Plan meetings and on our website.

What can I be doing now to get ready for the upcoming sports season?
- Review the available sports for the school year.
- Get your physical!  All students need a physical to participate in sports.  If you have gotten a physical within the last year, you may request paperwork to be filled out by your doctor without making an office visit (this may vary depending upon your provider)

I am a parent/guardian interested in helping out with clubs or sports.  Who do I speak with? What do you need help with?
Yea!!  We would be really excited to have you help out with sports or clubs.  Please email: cherman@summitps.org and let Ms. Herman know about your interests.  Alternatively, you can speak with your child's mentor at the personalized learning plan meeting in September.
Areas we need support:
Donations: Do you have time or resources to support our school?  You can contact Ms. Herman and let her know.
Drivers:  If your child joins a sports team, we always need families who are able to help drive our student-athletes to their competitions.  Please fill out a driver packet (included in the summer mailer) to be eligible
Assistant coaches: While we have most of our head coaches identified, we can always use additional helping hands.  If you are interested in helping to coach, please email cherman@summitps.org

2016-2017 School year calendar

We have officially published the 2016-2017 master calendar on our website! It includes first/last day of school, holidays and Expeditions. You can also find it in PDF form here.

Please note that the first day of school for new students is on August 15th (for New Student Orientation) and for all students on August 16th. Since strong student attendance is a predictor of academic success, we intentionally overlap with JUHSD holidays when possible, so please use the calendar to plan family vacations during non-school days. Stay tuned for a more detailed events calendar in the summer mailing.
