Hey Faculty,
Be on the lookout for an email concerning the College's upcoming M2C3 (Minority Male Community College Collaborative) faculty survey. All faculty, full-time and adjunct, will receive an email in the next few weeks from Dr. Steve Calatrello with a link to the M2C3 Faculty Survey. Once you receive this email, all faculty should take the time to complete and submit the survey. All replies are anonymous and no one at the College will see the individual survey responses. This is one of many steps in conducting the necessary research to help our students be successful.
Thanks in Advance,
Chuck Holbrook

Advising Success Story...
As we continue to move forward with our assigned advising model, it is important to note that each one of our students brings a story, a motive, and a dream. It is our goal as their advisor to empower and encourage them to take it to the next level. Here’s a first-hand account of how our staff lives out Calhoun’s mission on a daily basis, told by Alexandrea Irby.
A returning student came into the advising center about three months ago. She had been taking classes since 2003 intermittently, working full-time and raising her two children. The student was contemplating an application to the Medical Laboratory Technician program or the Surgical Technician program. We spoke extensively about the student’s goals, her past applications (that did not result in admission to the program) and her current fear of applying. The student decided she would spend more time thinking about submitting her application, but leaned toward surgical technology. We met again once her decision was made to review the application and I admonished the student to submit the application despite her previous attempts. I sent the student a card of encouragement and asked her to keep me posted. Last Wednesday, when I arrived to work, the student was standing in the office to give me the news that she had been accepted into the program! I was so excited that I hugged the student and almost begin to cry! The student said that without the support of the advising staff, the drive to try again and the encouragement she received; she wouldn’t know this feeling of accomplishment. Her children were proud because “Mommy got into that big school” and she does not plan to disappoint them. She is looking forward to completing the program here at Calhoun and heading straight into the workforce.

FastTrack 2016 Update for ATD
This year’s Summer FastTrack Academy kicked off the week of June 13th with 357 students coming to both the Decatur and Huntsville campus to take a pre-assessment and attend an introductory session to the program. After the first couple weeks of instruction, there are currently 338 students enrolled in the program. These students are attending math and/or English classes offered by Calhoun’s Adult Education department to build their skills to hopefully place into college level courses for the 2016 fall semester. The students will be reassessed this week (July 25) to determine if they are eligible to advance to the next level in math and/or English. FastTrack students are also attending a Freshman Seminar (ORI 110) course to gain this important knowledge before the start of the fall semester. This program is available to students at no charge!
The program is a great way to provide engagement with our developmental students that are more likely to drop out and not complete a degree. Last year, 98 out of 104 students completed the program and over 90% persisted to fall classes. On average, FastTrack students saved 5.71 credit hours and $822.85 per student. We are hopeful this year’s academy is as successful. If you have questions or would like more information about the program, you may contact Kelli Morris at 256.306.2602 or Wes Harris at 256.306.2867.

Wellness/Access Fee
Beginning with the 2016 Fall semester, there will be an increase in tuition/fees, which is the addition of a wellness center access fee. The System Office has interpreted the tuition waiver policy to exclude fees. This was a decision made at the state level, and the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) is implementing that change system wide.
Full-time and H35 Employees who are also Calhoun students are exempt from the access/wellness fee. Please click here for the most recent published information.
