Take a tour of the Battlefield this summer

Picture of a section of an old kitchen

Two of our sites are only open to the public during the summer.  If you haven’t visited them, or it has been a while, don’t forget to check out the Battle Ground Hotel Museum (and the improved Redmond Heights Park that sites adjacent) and Willoughby Historical Museum before Labour Day weekend.

Battle Ground Hotel Museum is a wonderful interpreted 1850s tavern that explores early tourism life in our community.  The Museum is located on the historic battlefield of Lundy’s Lane. Tours by costumed interpreters take you through life in the tavern and the impact of the Battle of Lundy’s Lane.  It is open Friday – Sunday from 11am to 5pm until August 28th and located at 6151 Lundy’s Lane.  We also provide tours of the battlefield on these days at 2pm.  Please arrive early.

Willoughby Historical Museum explores the rural life of Niagara Falls.   Located along the Parkway on the corner of Weaver Road, a visit to the museum will include an exploration of the history of Willoughby.  This museum is open Wednesday – Sunday 11am to 5pm until August 30th

Both museums offer free admission.

"FACES: Portraits From Our City"
Faces exhibition poster

The Niagara Falls History Museum is excited to announce its newest temporary exhibition, Faces: Portraits From Our City, opening in the Niagara History Museum on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The images shown in this exhibition are portraits from two collections brought together to highlight this classic genre of portraiture.
The artworks included will move the viewer through a variety of themes and mediums --- from portraits commissioned as statements of power to the highly stylized constructs found in the abstract. The exhibition showcases more than 40 portraits from the historical collections of the Niagara Falls Museums and contemporary collection of the Niagara Falls Art Gallery.
Faces Portraits Exhibition will be featured at the Niagara Falls History Museum, 5810 Ferry Street, from May 14 to November 27, 2016.

Help Celebrate Canada’s 150 Birthday by lending us a piece of your history

A picture of a collection of old objects.

The Museum is gathering 150 objects from the people of Niagara to tell the story of what it is to be Canadian.
Do you have an heirloom that ties you to Canada?  What connects you to your Canadian Community?  What do you have that makes you think of Canada?  What is quintessentially Canadian to you?  What do you miss when you are away from Canada?
Your objects and your stories will be on display at the Niagara Falls History Museum from
May – December 2017

The Niagara Spanish Aero Car
(now called the Whirlpool Aerocar)

Painting of people watching the aero car

In 1913, the Niagara Parks Commission granted a fifty year franchise to a Spanish Company, Estudios y Obras de Ingenieria, to build and operate a cable car ride over the Whirlpool, from Colt's Point to Thompson's Point. The cable car was designed and built by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres-Quevado. It was similar in structure to a smaller cable car at Mount Ulia San Sebastian in Spain, but could accommodate forty people. To learn more about the aero car, follow the link below:

Also on Thursday nights, when you visit the Museum, you might run across one of our new crew of volunteers. These individuals have worked with us on coming up with a new perspective on looking at our history. There will be new people out each week, so make it a habit of stopping by.

Educational Programs

The Museum has released the 2015/16 educational program offerings for teachers. There are a few new programs that fit the Ontario Curriculum as well as Museum and Battlefield tours.

We are also excited to be working with Niagara Falls Transit on offering free bus transportation to elementary school children.
