Night to Unite
The Edina Police and Fire-Rescue & Inspections departments encourage residents to turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors on Aug. 2 to celebrate Night to Unite. Last year, more than 80 Night to Unite block parties were registered with the City of Edina. Party organizers can request a visit by a police car, fire truck, ambulance, Animal Control, Sparky, K-9 Officer or Bike Patrol Officer. Night to Unite was created to promote neighborhood spirit, increase awareness in crime prevention and build a stronger partnership between the police and fire departments and community members. To register, call the Edina Police Department at 952-826-1610 or visit EdinaMN.gov/Police and click on the “Night to Unite” button. For more information, contact the Police Department, 952-826-1610.

Aug. 3 Council Meeting
Just a reminder that because Night to Unite falls on the first Tuesday of August, our first Council meeting in August will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Crime Alert
The Edina Crime Prevention Fund is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and charging of the person or persons responsible for recent residential burglaries and other property crimes. Between 11 p.m. Monday, July 18 and 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, three burglaries, an attempted burglary, theft from a vehicle and vehicle theft occurred in the Lake Cornelia and South Cornelia neighborhoods. We encourage anyone with information regarding these incidents or suspects to contact the Edina Police Department at 952-826-1600, any time of day. The identity of people contributing information may remain confidential. The Edina Crime Prevention Fund is the sole judge of any point of contention regarding the reward, and any decision on any issue connected with the reward is final.

Water
Staff will participate in a webinar with the Metropolitan Council discussing Water Resources Planning as it relates to the Comprehensive Plan Update due in 2018. This plan is included in Chapter 8 of our Comprehensive Plan. A new requirement of this plan update requires “communities served by the regional wastewater system will include an I/I mitigation program in its comprehensive sewer plan, including a program to mitigate sources of I/I from private property.” There are many questions and legal concerns related to these requirements on private property. Minimum requirements have not been established yet but the conversation is ongoing.

Website Design RFP
The Communications & Technology Services Department has begun the process to redesign the City’s website. An RFP was issued July 15 for redesign and implementation services. Responses are due Thursday, Sept. 1. It is anticipated to be completed May 1, 2017. The City’s current website launched in June 2012. The City redesigns its website about every five years. The RFP is available to interested parties at EdinaMN.gov/publichearings.

4530 France Ave.
At its July 13 meeting, the Planning Commission recommended approval of a proposal to tear down the existing vacant oil change building and build a new office at 4530 France Ave.. The Commission also recommended approval of a proposal to remodel the existing office building at 7375 Bush Lake Road into the Christian Family Church. The City Council will consider these projects at its August 3 regular meeting.

Aquatic Center
Since June 4, we have had 31,655 members check-in. Saturdays and Sundays are clearly the most popular days with a total of 11,831 (37%) visits coming on those days. Paid daily admissions total 21,233 visits. Of those visits, 15,613 were regular admissions, 2,156 were Twilight admissions and 3,339 were group admissions. It’s not too late to get a season pass. They are still a great value and can be purchased online or in person at the Aquatic Center.

Election Judge Training
Election judge training for the August primary began this week. Thirty-six judges trained this week. More do their training next week.

7200 France Stormwater Management
I met with a group of staff yesterday to discuss what might be involved in the City planning, financing and executing a stormwater management solution for the 7200 France area. This issue seems to consistently spoil redevelopment plans for the site. We are exploring options and will keep the Council informed as the discussion advances.

Liquor Store Task Force
The task force and supporting staff are working on preparation of the final report and recommendations. We are in the process of scheduling a final wrap-up meeting for the task force in August.
