“Ascot Day” at Cheylesmore Good Neighbours
Last Friday, Roger attended ‘Ascot Day’ which was organised by the Good Neighbours group. We watched races from Ascot, had a 'flutter' and enjoyed a lovely buffet. Roger & his fellow councillor had the honour of judging the prettiest hat. Everyone certainly appeared to be having a good time.

Cheylesmore Library - Volunteers Required
So far 2 residents have expressed an interest in volunteering at Cheylesmore Library, to help keep it open.
Under draft proposals, Cheylesmore Library can now only stay open if run by volunteers from May 2017.
Workshops are currently taking place to examine and explore possible ways forward for libraries.
Please talk to your neighbours about this as they may not be aware.
Following last week's update, we saw comments from residents that they didn't know that Cheylesmore had a library.
If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please contact the Community Centre or us.

Procedure for Issuing a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) for Parking Obstructions
A Whitley resident asked the Parking Services Team if a photograph of a car parked on their drop kerb could be used to issue a PCN.
This was the response from Dave Arnett, Service Supervisor, Parking Services Team:
In order for a penalty charge notice (PCN) to be issued, it requires a Civil Enforcement Officer (CEO) to be present at the time of the obstruction taking place and they are required to load all the information into their hand held devices along with accompanying photographs, we unfortunately cannot accept photographs from third parties to use as evidence towards creating a PCN after the event.

In order for us to act when a dropped kerb is blocked we would require that the resident call us on 024 7683 4367 and we would endeavour to deploy a CEO to the location to issue a PCN. Due to legislation, we are required to give a 5 minute observation period before issuing a PCN to this type of parking contravention, which is an automatic countdown built into the officers handhelds and will prevent any ticket issue, until such time has elapsed. We do receive the same complaint from many residents who live close to schools and if we can arrive in time we would try to issue a PCN where possible.

Our resource during these times of the day can be very limited, as the schools themselves request that we patrol their entrances at drop off and collection times due to their concerns about the safety of the children. If your dropped kerb is blocked and you call us on the telephone number below, we will endeavour to assist however, for the short period of time that your access point is blocked for, we may not be able to arrive in time.

Capability Brown Festival
The Capability Brown Festival has launched across the country and Coombe Country Park is taking part with a number of events. Coombe is a designated urban site in the festival and Heritage Lottery Fund has provided some funding to help celebrate the work of Lancelot "Capability" Brown at Coombe and engage audiences in experiencing one of Brown's landscapes.

The park's events focus on celebrating the biodiversity and appreciating the amazing vistas brought about by Brown's landscape design. In addition to the tree climbing workshops here are some of the confirmed events: Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, many of these events are just £1.50 per person. See our eventsfor details or call 024 7645 3720 to make a booking. More details to follow about further lake walks, guided garden tours, tree planting and photography competition

Coventry City Council’s Scrutiny Facebook Page
We’ve been asked to remind residents of the Council’s Scrutiny Facebook Page
Scrutiny is part of Coventry City Council’s process for ensuring that decision-making is robust & takes account of local need. Meetings are open to the public. This page is intended to provide opportunity for people to find out more about what issues are being scrutinised by Councillors and to find out ways to become involved.

Free Playwriting Programme at Belgrade Theatre
The Belgrade Theatre has a strong commitment to representing the diversity of the city’s communities, and for the last few years has been working hard to build links with local BAME groups. Whilst the representation of BAME communities in our existing groups is largely reflective of the city ratios, the voices of these communities are rarely heard since they are always a minority voice within a group. So the theatre’s work has focused on developing a writing programme, Critical Mass, to develop writers from within the local community; and on running targeted projects, such as the Black Youth Theatre.

Critical Mass is a free 10 week playwriting programme run at the Belgrade Theatre for writers aged 18+ from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. There are 20 places available which will be allocated to the writers who submit the best work. The programme will run from September to December 2016 on Tuesday evenings.

‘Safe and Well’ - Checks from West Midlands Fire Service
There are clear links between poor health and the risk of fire. That’s why we focus so much of our prevention work on keeping our more vulnerable residents safe and well.

We know that someone’s risk from fire is often linked to things like old age, their mental health, or how much they drink or smoke. By understanding this, and working with health organisations to support vulnerable people, we can stop fires happening in the first place.

Our frontline firefighters and expert prevention staff visit 27,000 homes a year to carry out our ‘Safe and Well’ checks.  To find out if we can offer you or someone you know a Safe and Well visit, please call us for free on 0800 389 5525.
