Youth Leadership Council Celebration

On Thursday, June 30, NYC Service held a Youth Leadership Council Celebration to recognize the successful work of 68 Youth Leadership Councils in the past year. The celebration included speeches from NYC Council-member Mathieu Eugene, New York City Schools Chancellor, Carmen Farina, and Chris “Shockwave” Sullivan from The Electric Company. We are proud of everything the Youth Leadership Councils for strengthening their communities and creating a culture of youth voice in New York City.  We are excited to see what happens in 2017. If interested in serving on a Youth Leadership Council, the application will be live on our website in August.

Inaugural Mentoring Summit: Celebrate Mentoring Now and in the Future

On Tuesday, June 21, NYC Service hosted our inaugural Mentoring Summit: Celebrate Mentoring Now and in the Future.  The event was hosted at FPWA and included several different community based organizations and City agencies in attendance. Inspiring remarks were shared by some of the initiatives largest advocates: Jennifer Jones Austin, CEO and Executive Director, FPWA, Cyrus Garrett, Executive Director, Young Men’s Initiative, and surprise guest speaker, Saundra Thomas, Vice-President of Community Affairs, WABC-TV.  Mentors and Mentees throughout the city were celebrated for their involvement in one of NYC’s largest initiatives.  Part of the summit included a youth panel, which gave a few of NYC’s brightest young adults the chance to share their incredible stories and experiences.  The inaugural Mentoring Summit was a huge success and we are looking forward to expanding the opportunities for mentoring across the City.

The 2nd annual Older New Yorkers Service Summit

On Thursday June 16, NYC Service and The Department for the Aging hosted the second annual 2016 Older New Yorkers Service Summit. The summit’s focused on “tracking volunteers” and brought together programs that have an interest in learning about best practices, tools, and resources to help increase and enhance volunteer tracking. The summit included a panel portion where panelists discussed how community based organizations working with older adults can explore news options for tracking that include web-based forms and software.  

Now Recruiting: Neighborhood Impact & Expansion Pilot

NYC Service in partnership with the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit (CAU), and the City University of New York will be conducting a 3-day pilot study in the neighborhoods of Sunnyside, Woodside and Jackson Heights. We are currently recruiting more than 600 volunteers who will spend a day canvassing these neighborhoods, with the objective of learning how residents engage with their local communities. Click here to see what different time slots are available and sign-up for a shift. If your schedule allows, we also highly encourage interested individuals to register for multiple time slots!

Become a mentor today!

Friends of Island Academy are looking for volunteers to serve as a friend and mentor to formerly incarcerated fathers who have expressed an interest in transforming their lives after jail for the sake of their children, families and communities. Volunteers will provide friendship, support and inspiration to the mentee with whom they have been matched.To learn more please click here

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine: Volunteers Needed

Rescuing Leftover Cuisine is looking for passionate volunteers to join our team as Lead Rescuers. Volunteers will make weekly food pickups and on-foot deliveries to those who need it the most! Lead Rescuers spearhead events every week depending on their schedule. To learn more please click here.

Build Homes in Queens 

Habitat for Humanity New York City is looking for volunteers to help in the building of quality homes with families in need. Habitat for Humanity build year round to move waiting families into their new homes and repair homes still badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
