WNYC Airs Awards for Politeness
"In a unique contest conducted by the Junior Inspectors' Club of the Department of Sanitation, a Harlem boy and girl were selected among the ten most polite and courteous children of New York City. The Harlem children are Amos Chisholm, 12, of 148 West 129th street, and Consuelo Noguera, 11, of 266 West 116th street, whose grandparents were Spanish.
"On Friday, February 11, presentations were made to the 10 winners by Commissioner William F. Carey of the Department of Sanitation, which is the sponsor for the WPA directed Junior Inspectors' Club. The ten boys and girls, representing every section of the city and as marry races, appeared in a special radio presentation over WNYC, the municipal broadcasting station.
"They answered questions of good conduct asked them by Matthew Napear, secretary of the Department of Sanitation, who is organizer and commander-in-chief of the club. Included also among those to receive honorable mention were: Ace Townsend, 12, of 221 West 120th street; Catherine Thomas, 16, Wadleigh High School School girl; and Clifford M. Johnson, 18, who attends the High School of Commerce."
