Welcome News
June was an extremely busy month for us. The Board and NGIWA members met with the NGIA Structure Review Committee who conducted a consultation meeting and provided us with the opportunity to provide feedback and contribute to the review process on behalf of WA. Planning through evaluation and consultation is an extremely important part of the Board’s work and I am constantly discussing with members and industry stakeholders how NGIWA can grow and achieve its aims and objectives. Monitoring is the key to success.

Vale Steve Vallance (Muchea Tree Farm)
It was with sadness that the industry learned of the passing of Steve Vallance from Muchea Tree Farm late last month.  Steve along with wife Natalie have been members of NGIWA for many years and long time supporters of Garden Week/Perth Garden Festival (only missing one event over the years - due to Steve's poor health).

The staff, Board and members of
NGIWA send their deepest condolences to Natalie and her family during this sad time. Thank you to Nancy Scade of Australian Native Nursery for these heartfelt words:-
"Last week I attended the funeral of Steve Vallance,  It was standing room only after people had filled the church, the outer veranda and garden and also the large hall. I suspect that it was only family and very close friends who knew all of what Steve had packed into his considerably full and productive life.  The W.A Nursery Industry was well represented which truly indicated the respect that our industry had for Steve.  His family were obviously very important to Steve. Natalie and his four daughters are to be congratulated for the eloquent insights they gave us into his life. One comment that resulted in laughter was that Steve lived in a house full of women - Natalie, four daughters "and even the dog was female".

Steve was a great supporter of Garden Week and the Garden Festival.  At my first Garden Week I knew nothing about retailing plants and Steve and Natalie had already retailed at about 15 shows. Steve kindly checked over my site and gave me tips on how to retail.  Every year he checked to make sure that he was not undercutting my prices. At the end of the shows, he would ask me how successful the show had been. This was then followed up with a comment that he might not attend the following year because things could have been better. He and Natalie always did return and every year their site has always been packed with customers and beautiful plants.

Rob Harington (Outspan Nursery, closed about 20 years ago) was a mentor to Steve and Natalie and also a mentor to me. Rob encouraged us three to enter this industry and was always very generous with his advice.  Steve followed Rob's example as well as the "Sharing Plant Production Knowledge Globally" of the International Plant Propagators Society.  Steve was an active member of IPPS and had just retired from being the President at the recent IPPS Conference in Adelaide. Steve will be a great loss to our industry."

NextGen News
Eva Ricci from WA Turf has forwarded us an invitation for NGIWA NextGen to attend their Turf Australia NxGen Forum in Perth from 28-30th August.  Even though the content of this forum may be heavily turf related, some of our NGIWA NextGenners may be interested in attending.  If you would like to attend, NGIWA will assist by subsidising any NGIWA member $25.  [Further details...]
Feedback From Workshops & Events & Sponsorship Opportunities
Thank you to all of our members who take the time to attend our many workshops and events.  We understand it is a cost to business to send staff to these things, and we hope that they take away new and invaluable knowledge that can be applied to their work as well as new industry friendships and allies.  We are focusing more towards sponsorship of these events and workshops thus enabling us to attract better presenters and to put them on for members at no or minimum cost.  If you and your business would like to be represented at a Retailers Night, Growers Workshop, NextGen Workshop or socialising event, then please contact us at reception@ngiwa.com.au or call 0419 930008.

Thank you to those of you who also take the time to drop us a few lines of feedback following our events - they really are valued and they allow us to evaluate and improve future workshops and events:-

Retailer's Night - Emotional Intelligence (22/6/16)
"Being relatively new to the nursery industry we loved hearing the science behind one of our most popular fertiliser products, Eco Growth. Dan Sutton was an excellent presenter and provided clear and memorable information that we can share with customers. It was great meeting NGIWA’s new CEO Matthew Lunn too as he was able to give us an update on where the industry is headed and what events are planned." (Helen Newman and Melissa Warrener - Dawson's Garden World)
"Lots of laughs from the emotional intelligence questionnaire, but also very enlightening. Great to chat to staff from other garden centres as well." (Rose Cox, Zanthorrea Nursery)

NGIWA Members' Breakfast - The Shorehouse (29/6/16)
"Can I express our congratulations on not only the turn out this morning, but the event itself - what a success; good company, inspiring speaker, good across table banter and good food. What more could one ask to start the day off with?  We should if possible do more of the breakfast meets with a short guest speaker. Short, Sharp and Punchy. Thanks for all your hard work not only for this event but all the behind the scenes work that makes events like this so successful. Congrats." (Peter Hiscock, Premium Plastics)
"Thank you for another AWESOME event hosted by NGIWA! Matt Lunn was inspiring and a breath of fresh air :)" (Lisa Hage, South Metropolitan TAFE, Murdoch)
Member Spotlight - Zanthorrea Nursery
When it comes to discussing a garden centre worth visiting, it won’t be too long before Zanthorrea Nursery pops up into the conversation. Its humble beginnings started back in 1975 by Jean Hooper, son Alec and wife Jackie, mainly to support Jean’s garden design business. As drought and water restrictions came to the fore, Zanthorrea saw a niche in the native plant line and after 40 years in business, the rest is history.  [Read more...]

202020 Vision Policy Guides

We know green space grows best when policy supports it. This is why Hort Innovation has developed the 202020 Vision Policy Guides, to help you understand the playing field, the rules and regulations and the top 10 opportunities when it comes to green space in Australia.

The three-part Policy Guide emerged from the 202020 Vision's desire for clarity around the policy structures and processes in place, which present a barrier to green space provision in Australia.  A first of its kind research by Josh Byrne & Associates, commissioned by Hort Innovation for the 202020 Vision Policy Guide, has identified the opportunities and challenges surrounding urban greening from an inter-governmental perspective.

While the Policy Guides not only recognise major policy ‘pain points’ they also address opportunities for all levels of government, as well as the private sector to overcome these to realise the health, economic, cooling and productivity benefits of leafy urban areas.

New NIASA Accredited Businesses

Congratulations to Citrees Nursery and The Tube Nursery who have been working hard with former IDO, Katrina Hill, towards approval for NIASA accreditation (Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia).

As all affected members have already been advised, NGIWA will no longer be managing the FMS Program (NIASA, EcoHort and BioSecure HACCP) in WA.  As of 1st January 2017 the program will be managed nationally by NGIA and as funding is no longer available, we are unable to provide audits etc during the transitional period.  Most audits for 2016 have been completed to ensure minimum disruption during this time and all accreditation certificates (to 31st Dec 2016) are being sent out to members at no charge.
