Happy July!
The snow is here!!!!

Hi snow bunnies, and welcome to our July newsletter. The moment we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived. Winter is here! Both Whakapapa and Turoa ski areas are set to open on the upper slopes. So get those bookings in or renew your membership if you haven’t done so yet. Let’s get this season started! Both lodges have received some TLC over the summer months during our working bees and smaller work parties from members. Rooms 1-5 of the National Park Lodge had a spruce up with sealing, painting and new heaters.

Booking rates

On Thursday 21st we had another committee meeting to finalize the booking rates. We have had a late start to the season because of the late snowfall. School holidays are normally a major revenue source and bookings have been light. Therefore the committee had to review the accommodation charges to balance the annual budget for the rest of the season.
Winter rates for the National Park Lodge will be $25 per night for members and $40 for non members. This will still include a light breakfast and tea & coffee.
For stays at the Ruapehu Lodge rates will be $42 and $58 for members and non members respectively including a light breakfast and dinner. All bookings made and paid by the 1st August will still be accepted at the previous rates.

Special Deals

  • For members a 50% discount will be applied for children aged 0-5 years, 25% for 6-15 year olds, non members will receive the 50% discount for 0-5 year olds at either lodge.
  • Catch up and have lunch at the Ruapehu lodge for $5 cash (from 13th August). Just let the custodian know before, so he can prepare enough food. Contact details will be displayed at the National Park Lodge.
  • New guest/member discounts: If you bring new guests who book for a minimum 2 night stay, they will get the first night at member rates. If they decide to join the club you will receive one free night per new membership!
  • Summer rates: Rates  will be $23 per night for the National Park Lodge and $30 per night for the Ruapehu Lodge for both members and non members. There will be no food supplied outside the skiing season.
  • A minimum booking of 2 people for National Park and 4 people for Ruapehu is required to cover the running costs. (That means for single occupancy a rate for 2 / 4 people will be charged.) Exceptions can be made at the committee's discretion.
Special General Meeting

A Special General Meeting of the Downhill Ski Club was held on 26 June regarding increasing pressure in running the Mt Ruapehu lodge with escalating costs, expensive DOC projects and very low occupancy.

The agenda was to consider the following options:
·        Find a new owner for the Mt Ruapehu Lodge – next step:  advertise on Trademe
·        Form a new club and split the ownership of the two lodges.
·        Face dissolution/liquidation of the club because of an inability to meet financial obligations.

The outcome was renewed enthusiasm to use the top club, while a further motion was put:
That we solicit offers for the top club lodge.  Before a final decision is made, it must go to another special meeting for final decision to accept an offer. The top  lodge will be advertised on Trademe.

A more detailed summary and draft minutes will be posted on our webpage this weekend.

Ruapehu Lodge

We will open the lodge from the 13th August! Back by popular demand are 2 basic meals (breakfast and dinner) included in your stay at the Ruapehu lodge and a custodian will be present. As the SGM has showed, we need to make the most of the lodge, so get yourself and your friends and families up there. The more the merrier.

There will be 2 club events held at the lodge and it is a great place to stay if you take part in RAL’s Ladies’, Men’s or Seniors’ weeks which all will be on in the week 22nd August to 26th August 2016. There are two more ladies’ weeks from 8th to 13th August 2016 and from 5th to 10th September 2016.

Stay at the Ruapehu Lodge - Win a week’s free accommodation in Rarotonga!!!

Yes, you read that right: All you have to do is have a great time at our Ruapehu Lodge and you might spend a week in Rarotonga. Ross Sutherland offers a weeks accommodation at Aremango Guesthouse, Muri for two or the family membership that has the most bed nights at the top lodge!! It’s a tough deal but someone has to do it. Let’s get this party started

Our official season opening party will be on the 30th of July at the National Park Lodge. Hopefully you will get some skiing or boading in before but the start of another great season, with all you fabulous people that are the Downhill Skiclub, needs a proper lift off. To celebrate what we’ve all been waiting for in style, let’s have a cocktail party. Bring those half full bottles of vodka or gin that have been sitting in your pantry, and any other ingredients you might fancy and together we should be able to create some yummy and interesing cocktails.(Brian: This does NOT mean you should bring the chilli vodka!) Feel free to dress up for the occasion.

See you all soon and keep up those snow dances!!
