Body Ritual Movement | Butoh Ritual Mexicano
5-day workshop with Master Butoh instructor, Diego Piñon
August 15-19, 2016
Monday-Friday, 11am-6pm
Spazio Performativo (10816 95 St.)
Cost: $300
This workshop is open to all levels, dancers, theatre artists, and those interested in performance, Butoh, and movement.
The proposal of Butoh Ritual Mexicano is to create an artistic practice with the intention to serve a personal and social function beyond, but not excluding, entertainment. Every Butoh Ritual Mexicano workshop involves high-impact aerobic training, active meditation, and guided improvisation, all embraced within a sense of communal ritual.
Instructor Bio:
Diego Piñón’s unique style of teaching and performance incorporates more than 35 years of research in Mexican energetic traditions, Japanese Butoh, ritual dance, modern dance and contemporary theatre. Departing from the guidance of Japanese Butoh masters Kazuo Ohno, Yoshito Ohno, Min Tanaka, Natsu Nakajima, among others, Diego Piñón performs and teaches throughout the US, Canada and Mexico using Butoh Ritual Mexicano as a means to transform personal, cultural and social divides through the dancing body.
Piñón explores the question of what it means to be human during these complex times in new and unexpected ways. His unique approach to the body and movement strips away clichés of gender, class, and national identity to reveal a deeply personal vision of humanity beyond the boundaries of convention.
Diego’s goal is not only to prepare extraordinary dancers or actors, not only to create extravagant performances, not only to involve the sacred and mystical uses of the stage, but to create an energetic presence that integrates all.

Nowhere Bound
Weekend Workshop in Contact Improvisation
with Martin Keogh
August 27-28, 2016
Saturday-Sunday, 10am-4pm
Spazio Performativo (10816 95 St.)
Cost: $135 public / $115 MZD members
Contact improvisation requires a courageous willingness - but never so much as when we dance in the absence of will - those moments when we drop the reigns and, nowhere bound, allow our animal to carry us.
Join good company for dancing and discovery. With games, some sweat, and the unique physicality of the contact body we will savor and rock the boundaries between states of allowing and mindful intention.
We will explore:
- Moving from a base of sensation
- Dancing with a shared central axis
- Seeking ease in going off balance
- Finding the spontaneous acrobatics of the form
- Spending more time in nuance, disorientation, and extended follow-through
We will take a one hour lunch break. Bring a favorite dish to share.
This workshop is for all levels: no bare beginners.
