Summer brings picnics and radio giveaways

CARC
We've made it past Summer Field Day and no doubt many of you are on family vacations and enjoying some much-deserved time off. It's been a busy year for the club, so it's time to look ahead to some fun, and hopefully relaxing, activities to fill the rest of the summer.

I'd first like to ask everyone to save the date of Saturday, August 20. That's when we're having our annual Columbia Amateur Radio Club Net Manager's Picnic. This year we're excited to host the event at beautiful Weston Lake on Fort Jackson. Come anytime after 10 a.m. We’ll eat at 1 p.m. and will need to be out of the facility by 6 p.m.

In addition to some great ham fellowship and food (hamburgers and hot dogs), there is also swimming ($3), boat rental ($3-$10), walking and fishing (you need a fishing license). Bring your favorite chair and perhaps a side dish! To get there, take Garners Ferry Road to Leesburg Road, go 8.3 miles, and turn left at the Weston Lake sign, then follow “CARC” signs. We are in Picnic Area #5.

I'd also like to remind everyone that we're in the early stages of the CARC net radio giveaway contest. This year we are giving away the popular Tytera MD-380 DMR radio! This is a great little DMR handheld, and many people are venturing into this mode with this very same radio. I look forward to presenting the radio to one lucky participant at our Sept. 5 meeting (Yes, we will meet on Labor Day as we traditionally do).

To participate and get in the drawing for the radio, all you have to do is check into our weekly Sunday and Wednesday night nets. The more you check in (and stay for comments) the better chance you have to get your name drawn. Full details on the drawing are on our website and you do not have to be present at the Sept. 5 meeting to collect the prize.

I'd like to thank Net Manager Gary Anderson, K4HGA, for taking care of both these events.

The CARC 2 meter Net is held on Sunday and Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. using the club's Columbia repeater, 147.330 (+) T156.7.

Our next club meeting will be August 1 at 7 p.m. at the ETV Building near downtown Columbia. The topic will be an Introduction to Operating Digital Modes, presented by your's truly. I hope to see many of you there!
