Educator Externship at UWSP NADF

Since 2015, the UWSP NADF has directly outreached to over 1000 K-12 students and educators in Wisconsin through interactive tours, visits to classrooms, and student events in over a dozen schools across the state.

The facility  has been working  to implement aquaculture and aquaponics education into the classrooms of local schools. With direct assistance from the facility, now three local high schools  have operating systems in the classroom. With aquaculture and aquaponics, teachers are able to incorporate STEM Education through hands-on and applied learning.

The success of this program is directly correlated with the dedication and passion of the educators. Sandy Naas, photos above, is the Agricultural and Natural Resources Educator for Ashland High School. She has been accepted as one of the few teachers to participate in the Educator Externship program through Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. She has chose to work as an aquaculture technician at UWSP NADF.

" The facility staff has been so valuable to me as a practicing aquaculturist, helping our school build the program and our own aquaponics system.... UWSP NADF agreed to take me on and I've already assisted with three different research projects with more to come as the summer goes on. I will bring these experiences back to my students and hopefully ignite their excitement about fish. UWSP's Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility is a vital resource for Northern Wisconsin and the Aquaculture industry and is inspiring a new generation of aquaculture enthusiasts."

-Sandy Naas

Lake Herring Manual Complete

Lake herring have been successfully feed trained and reared at UWSP-NADF for a number of years utilizing varying techniques, systems and practices. This research, funded by the USFWS,  has recently been organized into an informational manual for intensive culture of lake herring. The manual consists of best recommendations based on UWSP NADF success including egg collection, incubation systems, larval feeds, water quality, temperatures, densities, and grow out systems. Hard copies of this manual are being sent out to hatcheries interested in lake herring production for conservation. The manual is also accessible for download on the UWSP NADF webpage under Aquaculture Publications>Project Reports

UWSP Interns

UW-Stevens Point is the only university in Wisconsin to offer an aquaculture minor and the first in the nation to offer semester-long college aquaponic courses and a professional aquaponics certificate. With these opportunities at the UWSP-NADF,  and now the UWSP Aquaponics Innovation Center, interns receive the applied learning and experience needed for job placement and success.

Through the UWSP Aqua-business facilities, students are given the opportunity to work with a diversity of cold and cool water fish species at all life stages as well as various incubation systems, ponds, raceways and indoor re-circulation systems. Interns perform applied research projects that directly relate to the industry and the facility’s private business partnerships. Because of these courses and the hands on experience needed, students are receiving a world-class education and high success to directly benefit the aquaculture industry.

UWSP Aquaponics Innovation Center has recently accepted Kayla Fuller (left) and Jessica Pilsner (middle) as this years summer interns. Taylor Remington (right) has been accepted as the new UWSP AIC and Nelson and Pade, Inc. ® Greenhouse Manager. For the UWSP AIC, Taylor, Jessica and Kayla will be involved in rearing saugeyes in aquaponics as part of a study comparing integrated and traditional aquaculture systems funded by Sea Grant. Staff will learn best management practices while performing intensive water quality and micro-nutrient analysis as well as data collection, and fish husbandry.

UWSP NADF has accepted Brandon Blaszkowski (left) and welcomes back Mackenzie Klemek (right) as this summer’s aquaculture interns. Both Mackenzie and Brandon are UW-Stevens Point students and undertaking a minor in aquaculture. This is Mackenzie’s second summer internship at the facility, while Brandon has been volunteering at the facility throughout the winter and spring months. As interns, Mackenzie and Brandon will learn about pond, raceway, and water reuse systems for fish production. They will also learn techniques, protocols and management practices for fish from egg to grow-out. Mackenzie and Brandon will be working with various species at the UWSP NADF including Atlantic salmon, walleye, sauger, saugeye, yellow perch, lake trout, and lake sturgeon
