Casey Neistat, a YouTuber, Filmmaker, Co-founder of Beme, and My Hero
 Casey Neistat is my hero. If you don’t know who he is, you probably don’t spend too much time on YouTube. He is one of the biggest vloggers on the platform and he’s been a HUGE inspiration for me on my entrepreneurial journey. A few days ago, i stumbled upon this great interview of him with Lewis Howes. Throughout the hour long interview, he talks about how the media landscape has changed from the 90s, 00s, to now. He also discusses how youth approach and consume media content in a completely different way than previous generations. Here are some snippets I’d like to share with you. (FYI, there is some cursing throughout the interview.)

In this bit, Casey discusses THE commercial he made for Nike. He’s made a few commercials for Nike but this is THE commercial. The entire video is completely unbranded - there’s not a single piece of Nike apparel in the video at all and it’s still Casey’s most watched video (over 15 million views). This was content marketing before content marketing was even a thing.

Casey talks about how personal the relationships are between YouTubers (creators) and young viewers because the viewers actually choose to watch them. With TV, viewers are limited to consume whatever happens to be on.

You don’t need fancy equipment to make a good video. He edited his HBO show using iMovie, a free download (the same program I use to edit my videos).

Casey talks about his new social media company called Beme. It’s built with the goal of enabling others to share their stories through video “without the burden of creation.” This bit actually made me think about Sharespark and its mission. Casey says that creating is not for everyone which is why he made this app - it allows for recording and sharing of video in the easiest way possible. I agree that not everyone is an artist but I believe that everyone has the potential to create which is why I started Sharespark. I want to show people that creating isn’t as intimidating as it seems, hence the easy Make It Monday challenges.

I am truly passionate about helping people navigate all of this new digital and social technology. It started out as a small idea in the back of my head and grew to become Sharespark Media. However, another reason why this journey is so special to me is that it allowed me to discover and embrace my potential to create.
Before this, creating was a concept I never thought about. Yes, I have created videos, blogs, images, posts, snaps, status updates, ads, articles, and what have you, but I always thought of this process as a job function. I didn't see myself as a creator, an artist, until I started making my own ideas come to life... like in this video where I got my brother to dance down the streets of Long Beach with me.

To push my boundaries, I've set a personal goal to vlog every (other) day. I'm aiming for every day but Sharespark is THE priority so at the very least, you can expect four new videos on my YouTube channel every week. (If you check out my channel, hit that SUBSCRIBE button! It would make me very happy! :D)
On the Sharespark side, the Make It Monday show has gained a lot of momentum. Last night's show is at over 900 views and it's only been 24 hours. I'm really excited about that view count but I have to remember how I'm measuring success: media making. There's nowhere near enough media making happening in the Sharespark community. So, if you're reading this, please participate in this week's #SHARESPARK challenge and tell a friend to participate in the challenge too! The best way to understand new media is to create it!
Who knows? You might have the same creator epiphany as I did. :)
