NYU Shanghai’s Associate Professor of Economics, Steven Lehrer was selected to join the Shanghai municipal government's Thousand Talents program.  As a recipient, he is immediately eligible for research funding from both the Shanghai and Pudong government. Zemel: "...a crisis is the ultimate unpredictable-predictable.”

"The timing of a crisis and the parties it affects are unpredictable. On the other hand, it is predictable that crises of different types occur regularly, and once a crisis occurs, its development is governed by two immutable iron laws. First, the clock speed at which events evolve and decisions have to be made is vastly accelerated (often by orders of magnitude). Second, the public discussions concerning the crisis follow a markedly different set of rules from those that govern normal business discourse. The implication of these two laws is that if the organization has not prepared for the crisis in advance, the chances of successfully reacting on the fly are extremely low.”
