Open Space Forum this Tuesday
"Trees, parks and greenery – open space in Brunswick"
There's been a great response to the announcement of our community forum “Trees and parks” – a discussion of green open space in Brunswick.
Moreland ranks 26 out of 29 Melbourne Councils, for the amount of open space! We don’t have much open space or parkland, especially in Brunswick and Brunswick East.
What can we do to create green, open space in Brunswick? Pocket parks, rooftop gardens, better tree canopy, urban forests, upgrading facilities at Fleming Park and the Merri Creek? Bring along your ideas for action
Speakers will include Alex English (Open Space planner for Moreland Council), Friends of Edward Street and Communities for Nature.

Safety in Ewing Street
Local residents in Ewing Street, Brunswick have been campaigning for upgrades to improve safety and traffic management in the street. After a public consultation meeting on road safety last year, several concept plans have now been developed based on the feedback provided, traffic survey data and site inspections.
In order to progress to detailed design, Council are hoping for more feedback from the community. There will be a presentation of draft designs this Thursday, 12 May, at Brunswick Town Hall. East Brunswick: Brunswick MP supports safer streets
State Member for Brunswick Jane Garrett is supporting a local campaign to make the top of Nicholson Street safer, especially for children at the East Brunswick Primary School.
With a 60kph speed limit, the road is dangerous for all users, especially around the curves between Stewart and Lygon Streets and there have been several recent crashes.
Jane has met with the Minister for Roads, and produced this poster (copies available from her office).

Short survey to help Merri bridge
If a new bridge was built over the Merri Creek near CERES, between East Brunswick and Northcote - would you use it? Fill out this 5 minute survey and have your say.
(We reported last month that the community campaign for a pedestrian and bike bridge over the Merri creek has reached another stage with the two Councils, Moreland and Darebin, funding a study by engineers Pitt and Sherry.)
Even if it would only be occasionally, it would help if you could explain exactly how you would use the bridge.

Further down the creek, Yarra Council is proposing a new path to run directly from the east end of Holden Street, to Rushall Station.

Growing number of Moreland planning applications
Over the last six months, there have been a growing number of applications for planning permits in Moreland: 525 planning applications for the December 2015 quarter and 395 applications for the March 2016 quarter (Even though it appears that numbers have fallen over the last three months, the March quarter is traditionally the quietest period of the year, and the number of applications is significantly higher than in previous years).
Council made decisions on 438 planning applications in the first three months of this year -the highest number ever made in a first quarter (This compares with 557 for the December quarter, which was also a record decision making period).
There is increasing complexity of planning applications with 43 applications lodged in the last six months for over a million dollars’ worth of works.

Have your say on the Council budget
Moreland Council endorsed its Proposed 2016-17 Budget at its 26 April meeting.
Residents can suggest changes to the proposed budget and rating strategy, with submissions closing at 5 pm on Thursday 26 May 2016. All submissions will be published in a Council Report and reviewed at the Council Meeting to be held at 6 pm on Monday 6 June.
Taking of money: East Brunswickians most generous in Victoria
It's official: we're generous people. Brunswick East and Brunswick are respectively the most generous, and third most generous, postcodes in Victoria (taking charitable donations as a percentage of income). And sixth and eleventh, across Australia.

Sydney Road leads bike crash list
There were 223 bike crashes on Sydney Road reported to VicRoads from 2006 to 2015, dozens more than any other street in Melbourne. However The Age reports that only 40 per cent of Sydney Road vehicle-bike collisions reported to police in 2014-15 resulted in the offender being fined.
BUG meets last Thursday of the month
The next meeting of the Moreland Bicycle Users Group (BUG) will be held at 7pm on Thursday 26 May in the upstairs room at My Handlebar, 581 Sydney Road, Brunswick. Food and drinks can be purchased before, during and after the meeting.

Saxon Street opened
“Siteworks on Saxon Street” was officially opened on Sunday 1 May by Mayor Samantha Ratnam. The site includes a 19th century mansion, and the former St Ambrose secondary school buildings.
Meeting rooms are available for small or larger meetings, at reasonable prices. Hours are currently limited but will be extended as the facilities are completed. Other facilities include a community garden, with a bee-keeper as pictured here. The BlakDot gallery is moving to the former stables and will open shortly.

Wills candidates talk climate
With the Federal Election campaign underway, Climate Action Moreland (CAM) will hold a candidates meeting for the Federal seat of Wills, to discuss party policies on climate action.
Two leading candidates for the seat, previously held by retiring MP Kelvin Thompson, are Peter Khalil of the Australian Labor Party and Samantha Ratnam of the Australian Greens (who currently serves as Mayor of Moreland Council). The seat of Wills includes areas north of Park Street through Brunswick, right up to the Western Ring Road past Glenroy and Fawkner.
The CAM forum will allow voters to question the candidates’ policies on climate change and sustainability (with participation by other candidates as they are confirmed).

Moreland City Council has teamed up with the independent energy experts at Positive Charge to assist you in installing solar on your home or business. This information session will help you:
- Understand how solar works
- Work out if solar with or without battery storage might be right for your household or business
- Find out how Positive Charge selects their suppliers
- Understand the financial rebates available

- Hint: If you go to an evening meeting at 90 Bell Street and find the doors locked, you can probably get in through the back door via Urquhart Street.
