May is a special month at Due South Brewing Co. because we celebrate the anniversary of our taproom opening as well as American Craft Beer Week. This year, for our 4th Anniversary, we have a day of special beers and food planned. On May 14 we will be releasing bottles of One Eyed Tiki Coconut Porter for the first time ever, plus we will have special beers tapped all day. There will be food trucks at the brewery and MV My Food Truck is even doing a pig roast for us.
Check the list below for some featured Due South events and be sure to stop by your favorite craft beer bar for American Craft Beer Week between May 16 and May 22 when you are likely to find beer specials and discounts.
Due South Employee Spotlight
This month's featured employee is Reid, a talented fellow can help you find the right beer with a smile and he can jam on a mandolin as you have never heard before. You can find him behind the bar in our tasting room most Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights unless he's on tour with his Lake Worth based band, Everymen.
What is your favorite Due South beer and why?
I think my all around favorite is the Cat 4. It takes the bit of sweet toastiness I like about a red and adds that refreshing hoppiness you expect from a category IPA. It's perfect for Florida.
Besides the Due South taproom, where is your favorite place to drink beer?
I try to stop in at our other local breweries like Copperpoint, Devour, and Barrel of Monks but I tend to favor an old fashioned pub for a casual drink.
What is the best vacation you ever took and why?
I'm not sure if this counts as a vacation, but my band and I recently went on tour in continental Europe. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. The people were charming, the beer was superb, and the churches were awe inspiring. I'm a sucker for a good giant old edifice.
If someone asked you what it's like working at Due South, what would you say?
It's fun! Everyone I work with is a hoot and the customers are great. Plus I get to learn a lot about beer!
What is your favorite customer reaction to a Due South beer?
I love when we get someone who isn't much of a beer drinker in at the brewery. It's fun to work backwards and find the right style of beer for them. When they finally get the beer that's just right, that's my favorite.
Featured Beer
This month's featured beer is our newest Spring seasonal, Radler. The Radler is a German style that combines a lighter beer with juice or soda to create a refreshing beverage that was originally intended for bicycle riders.
Our rendition of this style uses a lager base that already has a nice, light body. It is then mixed with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice from the Treasure Coast of Florida. The sweet yet tart flavors of the juice combine with the lager for a beer that will quench any biker or non-biker's thirst instantly.
Radler will be available through the end of June in our taproom and in our distribution footprint on draft and in 4 pack cans.
Featured Retailer
There was a time not too long ago that you couldn't find a craft beer in Palm Beach County. Very few places recognized the importance of choice and couldn't quite wrap their heads around the idea that people wanted full flavored beers. Havana Hideout in Lake Worth was one of the first places to offer a craft beer lineup. In fact Due South has a very special history with Havana Hideout because it was the first place, outside of the brewery taproom, to tap Due South beer back in 2012.
Today, you can see a "Hurricane of IPAs", as Category 3 and Category 5 are always featured on draft. Category 4 Red IPA always makes an appearance when available. If you're into great local beer, live music, and a cool place to hangout go hit up Havana Hideout!
