Chief scientist to address Ag Institute Australia conference

Newly appointed Australian Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel will be headlining a conference in South Australia next month focussed on agricultural innovation.

The Ag Institute Australia (AIA) SA Division will be hosting the event at the Waite Agricultural Institute in Adelaide on Friday 27th May.

Dr Finkel will use the event to discuss the opportunities and challenges of innovation in science with particular reference to agriculture.

In addition, delegates will get an overview of the Federal Government’s innovation policy from Chair of the recent Inquiry into Agricultural Innovation, Mr Rowan Ramsey, while Executive Manager of Innovation for CSIRO’s ON Program, Ms Liza Noonan, will discuss ways to accelerate innovation.

These speakers and others will give delegates a strong understanding of the Australian Government’s innovation policy and how they can seize opportunities in areas such as research, consulting, manufacturing, marketing, farming and more.

This is the only event in Australia concentrating on the application of the government’s innovation policy to agriculture and is a “must go’ for people who wish to be part of the growth of the sector.

Ag Institute Australia’s prestigious National Student Award will also be presented at the event, with agricultural honours students from around Australia attending to compete for the award.

AIA South Australian Conference: The Government’s Innovation Policy – How can Agriculture and Our Profession make it happen and Benefit?

DATE and PLACE
– FRIDAY 27 MAY 2016 IN ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
The renewed interest in innovation is certainly welcome. To quote the policy “In a changing economic landscape, embracing innovation will be key to ensuring that our regions continue to grow and flourish” (http://www.innovation.gov.au/).

Most people will agree with the need to increase the innovation pipeline Hence the idea that successful industry innovation is a “pipeline” process – it needs ideas coming from practitioners and researchers, it needs triers and developers, it needs adopters and adapters and it needs promoters and marketers. All need to be encouraged and recognised since without anyone of them the process will stall.

The purpose of the Conference is to develop a thorough understanding of the Innovation Policy, the opportunities it provides, the constraints, what it should provide, and the most effective means of doing so. It will focus on primary industry related issues and needs in research, field application, and extension, including the place of consultants, marketing innovation and the opportunities for partnerships
