Waitsfield Elementary School Rocks!

May 5, 2016
One of the beautiful centerpieces left from the tables at the Staff Appreciation Luncheon. I don't have any pictures of the lovely tables or spectacular food because we were all so busy enjoying it that we forgot to take any photos!

Dear Friends and Families,
THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the wonderful Staff Appreciation Day hosted by the PTA yesterday. Truly, there is great satisfaction that comes from working with your children every day; I don't think you'll find an educator who doesn't list the joy of supporting students in growing as the primary reason that they do their job. That said, it sure is nice to be treated to a fabulous meal, served elegantly on lovely china (turns out our library is the best kept secret pop-up restaurant in town!) and to be offered massages throughout the day. Thank you to all who donated their time, their skills, their culinary treats and have given notes or words of encouragement all week. Waitsfield School is a wonderful place to work for many reasons and it has been especially wonderful this week.
GREEN UP Vermont is this weekend. Green up bags can be picked up at the front desk at Waitsfield School.

Finished pieces cooling in the kiln             Pottery waiting to be glazed

Thank you to the volunteers who helped to do some glazing of pottery yesterday morning. Lots was done and is beginning to come out of the kiln, looking wonderful. We still have quite a bit more glazing to do, however-- if anyone has any time to help glaze Friday or next Tuesday mornings, your assistance would be much appreciated. Even 15 minutes is helpful!
Respectfully,      Kaiya Korb,   Principal

Open Hearth After School Program News

Welcome to May! It seems that the spring weather has finally arrived and, hopefully, is here to stay. Our After School kids have been enjoying lots of outdoor time and wonderful opportunities to play with friends and just be children. Katie, Malcolm and Mary continue to use their expertise in creating engaging activities that are truly STEAM based.
This past month, as I previously mentioned, we were thrilled to host a marine biologist, Lindsay Graff, who shared her stories and expertise on shark research. Lindsay’s specialty is the study of the Great White Shark, and we were amazed to learn that most of her research occurs off the shores of Cape Cod. I was also amazed to witness the amount of knowledge and curiosity exhibited by all of our after school students. I believe that we have several marine biologists in the making.
This coming month we will be happy to welcome a few more guests to our After School program. On Wednesday, May 6th, Madeline Strasser will be visiting with some of her HWS fellow students, to talk with us about a new club she has helped to start, called She’s the First. The purpose of this club is to raise money for scholarships for girls living in low-income countries so they can go to school through an international nonprofit organization called She's the First (here). To raise awareness about this issue, Madeline will come to the After School program and read a book called Razia's Ray of Hope about the challenges one  girl faces when trying to get an education in Afghanistan. On May 18th, Lindsey Vandal will join us representing The Friends of the Mad River. We are looking forward to a day of river exploration and an opportunity to do some water testing in our own area.
I have been pursuing my own love of learning by taking several April-May workshops for professional development. Last week I attended a workshop taught by Ali Thomas and Rebecca Roy from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. I joined many educators from around the state to learn about available educational resources and practice lessons and activities to use in our program. Other professional development this month includes workshops on the impact of trauma on child development, and effective and positive communication techniques to use with children. These sessions provide me with tools to develop program management that promotes social and emotional development and creates inclusion and an atmosphere that is accessible to all.
Have a wonderful May, and thank you so much for all of your continued support.
Sincerely,   Susan Amestoy, Program director

The first cold but smiling arrival on Bike & Walk to School day. With the weather steadily warming, biking and walking to school in the morning is a great way to get your body and brain ready for the day. We love the positive impact on the environment that comes from bus riding too!
