Fiddler on the Roof opens Friday

The Stapleton Theatre Company is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year! Our spring production is the musical theatre classic, Fiddler on the Roof. Coincidentally, a revival of Fiddler on the Roof is currently enjoying great success on Broadway and just received a 2016 Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival (it won the Best Musical Tony Award when it made its debut in 1964).

Fiddler on the Roof tells the story Tevye, a Jewish milkman in early 1900s Russia. When Tevye's eldest daughter, Tzeitel, begs him to let her marry a poor tailor rather than the middle-aged butcher that he has already chosen for her, Tevye must choose between his own daughter's happiness and those beloved traditions that keep the outside world at bay. Each of his three eldest daughters marries, moving further from traditional ways, and Tevye must learn to adjust. Meanwhile, there are other forces at work in Anatevka, dangerous forces which threaten to destroy the very life he is trying to preserve. The show features memorable musical numbers such as Tradition, If I Were A Rich Man, and Matchmaker, Matchmaker.

Fiddler on the Roof features a cast of nearly 60 children, teens and adults. We encourage our Stapleton Ballet students and families to show their support for our theatre program and come to the Playhouse to see the show!

New! Saturday Summer Session

Due to popular demand, we will be offering a summer mini session of Saturday classes for our youngest ballerinas. Classes will begin on Saturday June 18 and run for six weeks (no class July 2), through July 30. Students should use their current class level for placement in this program. Rhythm & Dance will meet from 9:30 to 10:10; Intro to Dance from 10:20 to 11:00 am; and PB1/2 from 11:10-12:00. Please visit the Studio Director “Summer” tab to view and enroll in classes.

Expanded Open Classes this Summer

Your feedback is important to us. We have gathered input and reviewed last year’s program and are offering a revised, expanded Open Class program this summer. We will have two classes per day for four of the weeks: June 20-24, July 11-15, July 18-22 and Aug. 15-19.  Intermediate class is for students currently in Ballet 4-6. Advanced class is for current Advanced 1-3 students. The former “Open Class” with mixed levels-Ballet 6 to Advanced 3-will only be offered during the weeks of June 27-July 1 and Aug 8-12. The intent is to narrow the curriculum and offer skill appropriate classes to insure maximum benefit to all. Please note, age is no longer a qualifier for classes; students must be currently enrolled in the levels outlined above in order to participate. See details here. All students who wish to take classes during the summer must enroll in the Summer Open Class program (no fee).
Performances are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and on Sunday at 2:00 pm, this weekend and next (May 6-15). We are offering a special $2 per ticket discount (and no service charges!) to our Spotlight readers if you call the office at 415.454.5759 to order tickets. Please note: Saturday, May 7 is sold out. Tickets are currently available for all other performances.

Miss Bella goes to the White House

Lower division instructor and Fiddler on the Roof choreographer Bella Qureshi had the privilege of attending the International Jazz Day concert, with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, on Friday April 29. The concert was held on the South Lawn of the White House, and featured a multitude of renowned performers, including Bella’s father, world-famous percussionist and tabla player Zakir Hussain. The night before the concert, Bella attended an invitation-only dinner at the US Congress building. We are all so proud and excited for her and this amazing experience!
