"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.  God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”  John 4:23-24
MISSION STATEMENT
Heritage School provides a distinctive classical Christ-centered education that prepares students for servant leadership and lives that glorify God.

Turkey parts, Thesis prep and Table tennis

A few first week observations -   Heritage is a unique, eventful, and fun place even in May.  This first week I have been busy, looking, listening, learning, opening car doors, meeting students, parents, and visiting our outstanding faculty as they facilitate the teaching and learning in our classrooms.

Here are just a few of the highlights. I apologize for the weak attempt at alliteration.

Turkey parts:  I had the privilege of joining the Kindergartener show-n-tell where we passed around turkey feet, wings, beards, and marveled at God’s creative design.  Welcome to Gillespie County!

Thesis practice with the seniors:  Mr. Turpin invited me to join our seniors as they polish their thesis covering a diverse range of topics from the Ethics of Genetic Engineering to The Quandary of Lethal Autonomous Weapons. What a great endeavor to end their Heritage journey.  I look forward to watching them present next week.

Table Tennis (ok ping-pong) tourney observation:  I need to practice my game off campus so I can attempt, repeat attempt, to hold my own against the Upper School students.

I share these three first-week experiences to paint a picture of the uniqueness of Heritage School.  I love the fact that I see students learning, loving, and having fun as they encounter God and His creation.  As I shared with the faculty this week, the seemingly disparate parts - turkey feet, wing, and beard create a unique and magnificent bird much like the community of students, parents and faculty/staff  from different places and backgrounds, uniquely gifted that create our special community at Heritage.

A little about me and my family:

I was born and raised in Dallas, TX.  After graduating from Highland Park High School, I moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, graduating with BBA in marketing and then moved back to Dallas to attend Dallas Theological Seminary receiving a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies.  It was during those 2 years in Dallas while working as an Area Director for Young Life that my journey with Christian education had its roots.  I substituted often at Trinity Christian Academy.  After graduating from DTS I moved back to Austin, becoming a Bible teacher and coach at Hyde Park Baptist Jr./Sr. High School, eventually becoming Vice Principal focusing on admissions, counseling and college placement.  In 1992 I was among the founding members of Regents School of Austin serving as Headmaster.  I went on to become Executive Director at Redeemer Presbyterian directing the work of missions, mercy, youth and families.  I have worked in real estate, done development for International Justice Mission and helped several Christian School start-ups including the founding families and board of Heritage School.  I thought I would move to Fredericksburg at that time, but God had other plans.  I am glad to be back it - just took Him 23 years.  I am married to Alison and have five children. Abigail 15, Harrison 13, Emma 12, Christopher 8, and Quinn 5.  I look forward to getting to know the students and their families that make the Heritage community such a special place. I have had the opportunity to meet many of you at the curb, on campus and look forward to meeting all of you soon

"Huddle with the Head"

I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you in the next couple of weeks. You are invited to “huddle with the head”, Tuesday, May 10 and Thursday, May 12 at 2:25 p.m. and Wednesday, May 18 at 8:05 a.m., Herzog Hall, Room 101.

Grammar School Village

Kindergartners-- are reading six different digraph sounds as well as working simple addition problems using dominoes.
1st Graders--read a little each night during April to earn each layer of a banana split.  Their hard work paid off as we enjoyed making and eating them this week! Yummy!
2nd Graders--began our last unit in Texas History on "Cowboys and Cattle Drives".
3rd Graders--wrote booklets about how flowers grow from seeds and then shared them with the Kindergarten students.
5th Graders--joined other 4th graders from all over the county for Gillespie County "Ag" Day today. We spent all day learning about farm animals and equipment, soil, timber, rope, bees, etc.
5th Graders--taught "O Worship the King" in chapel this week. We also finished our persuasive essays and shared them aloud in class.

Art and Music Fest 2016

Mrs. Chastain teamed up with the Shakespeare Day celebration to showcase the art work of our grammar students.  The students have developed artistic skills in various art media.  You will notice that many of them have received medals and ribbons from art contests in which they were entered this year.

Mrs. Vaughan and Mrs. van der Stoel led the Logic students and Rhetoric Choir in a fun upbeat performance at the annual Spring Art Fest.  The music program at Heritage School is a vital part of  classical education and develops an appreciation for music.

Mrs. McComack displayed the remarkable art pieces from Logic and Rhetoric students.  From instruction, sketching, painting and sculpting, the students are equipped with many artistic forms of media.  Upper School students have also received many awards and accolades for their artistic talent.

Heritage Business Association

The Heritage Business Association’s business plan contest is finally coming to a close. Thursday, May 5th will be the judging date for the contestants. Several of our members and officers have created a plan their own business and we look forward to seeing what they have come up with. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship off their Momentum Camp fee and $500 dollars for furthering their education.

As the school year comes to a close, the HBA would like to inform everyone that we are going to have an end of year banquet to explain what it is we do in our meetings. The banquet will be Tuesday, May 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 in Herzog Hall. Parents and friends are cordially invited to join us for the banquet, where Blake Ashley will give an introduction to our association and the officers will present our summer endeavors including a middle school-focused business camp and a week-long internship program for our members to explore an industry they might be interested in.

Important Notices

Your Child's Safety is Important!

Heritage School has the safety of our students in mind as we post new signs on the playground.  We welcome student activity at Heritage School.  However, we ask that if your student would like to play on the playground after school hours, a parent or guardian must directly supervise their play.  Thank you for your cooperation!
Please note that Heritage School (Herzog Hall) closes daily at 4:00 p.m.  All students must be picked up by 4:00 p.m. unless they are participating in an athletic practice.   Thank you.
ATTENTION PARENTS:  PLEASE do not park in either of the circle drives in front of the school. These are fire lanes as well as drive through lanes and you are hindering the flow of traffic if you park your car there.  Please use the provided parking spaces if you need to park and come into the school.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Tutor Program:

Student Council is happy to announce that tutoring is now available for Upper School Students!  The tutoring program offers a unique opportunity for middle-schoolers to succeed academically with one-on-one help from an experienced Rhetoric school student, and helps strengthen the bond between the members of our Heritage Family.  There are currently 12 tutor-tutee pairs, and sessions usually occur during study halls after lunch (Other times can be arranged depending on the volunteer’s schedule).  Special thanks to all the students who have volunteered to make this possible!  If you are interested in getting a tutor, or if you have any questions, contact Sean O’Leary at soleary97@gmail.com for more information.

Heritage Families of 8th -12th Graders,

This summer will mark our fifth Local Missions Week, a week super-saturated with sweat, hard labor, and sleep deprivation. So, basically it promises to be totally amazing.

We will again partner with Curtis & Sara Allerkamp of Mision de Candelilla, and spend the week camping out along the creek at their property at 888 White Oak Rd.  Our dates will be the afternoon of Sun July 17 --  the morning of Fri July 22.  Cost is estimated to be $250/person, and scholarships are available. Though every cent will be passed along to Mision de Candelilla, is preferred for school to be the collections ‘middle man’, so please make checks payable to Heritage School (memo: Local Missions Week). Every year we have about 15 - 20 participants and our capacity this year will be 20 participants. A deposit of $125 secures your spot.

Our days will be spent doing a host of community service projects in and around Freddyburg and in the evenings our plan is to partner (again) with Oak Hills Church in hosting a community-wide VBS, targeting unchurched pockets of our community.

Every year Local Missions Week proves to be one of the most difficult yet rewarding of the year. LMW is a time of spiritual revival, forging of lasting friendships, and a time of intense personal and communal growth.  It’s amazing what happens when a group of ordinary folks come together, sharing the common mission of simply loving Jesus and loving others...

I’m truly humbled by your children’s eagerness every summer to serve.

Sincerely,

David Turpin

Early College Credit Registration Open for Spring

Central Texas College has opened its registration portal for Summer Classes. You should start the online application process at:   http://www.ctcd.edu/students/prospective-students/how-to-enroll/texas-students/   Complete the one-time online application to CTC, track down your SAT scores and make an appointment with Kristy Kothe at the Hill Country University Center (254-616-3401) You must be a junior or senior to register and are limited to two courses per semester.
More independent souls may find the ONLINE early college offerings at LeTourneau University more suitable: http://www.letu.edu/_Admissions/dualcredit/  Although LETU online students do not have designated online class times, they do have weekly deadlines for graded work. LETU courses cost about $360 each.
Early college credit not only saves thousands of tuition dollars ($328/course at CTC  compared to $950 at A&M and $3636 at Baylor), the gift of time and flexibility in your future college schedule can be more advantageous in pursuing a minor or double major. Also, the seniority attained by early college credit can make a huge difference at freshman registration. Of course, early college credits afford little advantage at all if your chosen major degree plan does not call for those courses or your target college does not accept the transfer. Mrs. Sauer can help you find that information and help you make a plan.
