A study published by the University of Newcastle, England, shows that learning a new skill such as drawing, changes the response of the brain. Drawing also develops psychomotor skills and hand-eye coordination and forces the brain to work harder. The full article may be viewed at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-33505017

Understanding French movies -
it gets better with practice!

See our previous articles about slang and French movies in our back issues of The French Class Newsletter.

Marius (2013). In French with English subtitles (sous-titres). This is a remake of the famous Pagnol’s trilogy (Marius, Fanny and Cesar) taking place in Marseille. A delightful movie with and by Daniel Auteuil.

Here are a few expressions you will hear in this movie:

- A quoi tu penses? What are you thinking about?

- Peut-être à toi. Maybe about you.

- Menteur! Liar!

- Tu me paies le café? Are you buying me coffee?

If we drink everything for free, there won’t be anything left for the customers.

- Si tu as voulu me faire un affront, tu as réussi. If you wanted to insult me, you succeeded.

I had to wait until I was 32 years old before my father gave me his last kick in the butt.

Have children and they’ll ruin your life!

- La spécialité de la maison. The house special.

First, you put one third of Curaço.

Then one third of lemon, a little bigger.

- Et un bon tiers de Picon. And a generous third of Picon.

- Et à la fin, un tiers d’eau. And in the end, one third of water.

- Ça fait 4 tiers. It makes 4 thirds.

- Exactement! J’espère que tu as tout bien compris. Exactly! I hope you understood everything.

- Oui mais dans un verre, il n’y a que 3 tiers. Yes, but in a glass there are only 3 thirds.

Of course not stupid, it depends on the size of the thirds.

No, it doesn’t depend. Even in a watering can, one can only put 3 thirds.

So explain to me how I was able to put 4 thirds in this glass!

- C’est de l’arithmétique. It’s arithmetic.

Arithmetic! So when one doesn’t know what else to say, one changes the subject!

ALBERTINE RETROUVEE

For a long time, the City of New York went without a French bookstore. Then came Albertine, named after the Marcel Proust character from A la Recherche du temps perdu. Conviently located at 972 5th Avenue across from Central Park, on the first floor of the French Embassy, Albertine, with its authentic smell of paper, wood and leather, is a warm, cozy and inviting place for book lovers. Don’t miss the upper floor with its exquisite ceiling and confortable sofas. Rare editions are in the back. There is also a children’s corner where kids will come across their favorite BD (comic books). Non French speakers can also find English translations of famous French novels or bilingual versions. If you don’t plan to go to the Big Apple any time soon, you may want to visit www.albertine.com.
