Director's report

Community & Family involvement and contributions in Early Childhood settings provide a great opportunity for us to connect with each other and support children to develop a sense of Belonging to their Community.

A lot always seems to happen in such a short time …since our last chat our old shed has been removed and a new one has been built ready for use. Changing the sheds has been the first stage of our backyard redevelopment project. The more streamlined shed has provided more space for storage of equipment and resources as well as more open play space around the sheds and better supervision into the yard. A great result for our first stage.
A huge thank you to all those families who attended the working bee last term to help us empty our old sheds and tidy up around the Pre-School.

We got so much done in the few hours that the saying “many hands make light work” really rang true. There was a lot of resources, equipment and general “stuff” that had to be packed up onto the truck and delivered to Storage King, where it was then unpacked.  The kinder yard also had a lovely tidy up, with trees pruned, weeds cleared, sweeping done and a trip to the tip,  so once again thank you to everyone who gave us a hand, it was really appreciated.
Our fundraising team is in full swing as they prepare for lots of exciting and fun activities that both support our community connections and our Pre-School. Our fundraising team work very hard behind the scenes to organise and prepare for events, please support our team by contributing in whatever way you can. All funds raised go to resources and equipment required to support our educational program and in particularly our outdoor play spaces within the redevelopment project. Thank you Erica & Rachel and the team for all your ongoing time and effort, it is really appreciated.

Also working very hard behind the scenes to raise much needed funds for our back yard redevelopment project, are our grants sub-committee team. Our Pre-School was very fortunate to receive funds from the Rotary Club to put towards purchasing a new cubby or fort structure for our backyard. Kyla & I had the opportunity to thank the Rotary Club in person for their generous donation to our Pre-School, an amount of just over $1900. We were one of 14 recipients to receive a donation and it was very interesting listening to the other deserving applicants that also received funds to realise how wide and varied the Rotary Club of Box Hill support is for their local community. Surprisingly for us as we sat there, one of the other recipients was the Yarran Dheran Association who had requested support to purchase puppets for the Bush Kinder Program.  Mart from the association mentioned our Pre-School in his explanation of their grant application. We took the opportunity to thank Mart and the association for their wonderful support for all of the Pre-Schools utilising the Yarran Dheran Reserve as part of their educational programs.
Thank you to our wonderful grants team Kyla & Jo for all your time and efforts in applying for a wide variety of grants to support the Pre-School. Your efforts have also been very much appreciated.

I really feel so extremely privileged to be a part of such an amazing community where our families and other community groups see our value and purpose and are so willing and generous in their support of our Pre-School. I really cannot say thank you enough.

Kim
Children's safety:  Parents, we would like your support in keeping all children coming into and leaving our Pre-School safe. Please be aware of where your young children are when families are moving in and out of the front gate. Please ensure that it is only your child going out of the gate with you and that the gate closes securely behind you. Your child should be next to you or holding your hand as you come and go.
Since the last newsletter the old sheds have been replaced with a fabulous new shed. Storage King Mitcham generously donated use of a secure storage space to hold the sheds' contents while the new shed was being installed. Thank you!

President's report

Hey all

As winter descends and we pull out the gumboots (extra important for Bush Kinder) our Rangeview community has been a hive of activity. The teachers have been letting us know that  other's day activities and preparations have been in full swing and the results, as always, are most precious.

The Gumnuts program continues to grow and we really must thank Meg & Hayley for the work they have put in building a great program that is really being talked about and a great initiative for those younger 3 year olds before they start in a full 3 year old program.

If you've headed out the back you will have seen that the backyard redevelopment has begun in the form of a new shed. The Pre-School has had a lot of work being done with guttering being replaced, the new shed and further planning around the rest of the backyard. A extra big thank you and hats off needs to go to Sandy Bourke. Sandy is the Maintenance Officer, but has pretty much been showing off some fine project management skills and without him the shed and a range of recent works just wouldn't have happened. I know the whole committee is grateful for his work and if you see him some time at a three year old drop off or pick up - say thanks.

Please keep a track of the working bees, they only take a few hours of your time on one weekend and are really important for helping create a space that is safe and fun for our children, but also helps support our fantastic teaching team who are great at what they do and need to spend their time focussing on supporting our children's learning and development - and not on maintenance.

I hope all the mum's enjoyed Mother's Day and many of you got to the Mother's Day Dinner.

Finally, don't forget the annual fundraising event happening in early June. The Fundraising Team are going all out and I'm hearing some great things, so all the details are in the foyer of the kinder  - be great to see you all there.

cheers,

Daniel

   Willow & Jacaranda Group News
We have had a lovely start to the term. A few tears from some of our friends but nothing prolonged that a hug and a little distraction hasn’t been able to fix. The dynamics in the groups are coming along as the children begin to develop their social skills. We have been working with the children in developing the way they approach play situations, helping them to learn the skills of entering play or allowing others to join in. We have also been focused on supporting the children to take turns and share with their peers. Learning these skills takes time, lots of reinforcement and continued guidance.
Our Mother's Day morning teas were delightful and the children enjoyed sharing their favourite songs and rhymes with their Mums.  Preparations for Mother's Day starts quite early for us as we endeavour to make sure each child has that something special to give to their Mum. We also like to make sure that each child is given time to work on the skill or experience required.
The children have been busy but very excited about doing special things for their Mum’s. The children’s drawings of their Mum’s were absolutely delightful and they like to describe her or tell us what is special about their mum as they work. The children placed lines and shapes together on the paper with a marker to illustrate their Mum and then with a wonderful splash of colour their picture of Mum was complete. Whatever stage your child is at with their drawing skills, remember all marks on paper lead to the intricacies of writing and drawing and each piece of work is of value in your child's development. To all the children their Mums are beautiful and very much loved.
As we had been learning about colours and planting over the last few weeks, we incorporated this into the gift the children made for their Mum. The beautiful pots were decorated by the children spooning a range of paint colours they selected onto the bottom of the pot. When there was enough paint it dribbled down over the sides to create the wonderful colour mixes and patterns. The excess paint then provided the opportunity for the children to create  a butterfly painting. The paper with the paint was folded in half and the children press their hands onto the page to spread the paint in all directions. Amazing art works were created and it has been really enjoyable to watch the children’s faces as they peeled open the paper to see the patterns and colours they had created. We have had great discussions about mixing colours and lots of predictions about what colour might be made.

The children delighted in sitting with us while they chose colours for their hand prints. The children were engaged in a wide range of sensory experiences just from this one activity, the cold wet paint, the ticklish brush, the feel of their wet messy hand being placed onto dry paper. There were lots of giggles and smiles and we hope that you cherish their prints as your children grow.
The children performed a small drama for their Mums, “Like a Leaf or Feather”. In this drama the children move through the steps of planting a seed and helping it grow. The children have also been watching and helping our pea seeds grow.
Carefully they water them each session and we can now clearly see the roots growing down into the soil and the stems getting taller and taller. When the children came to planting their Pansy seedling in their pot for their Mum, they were all very careful and gentle as they placed the small plant in position and filled around it with soil.
The fairy environment has been very popular as the children manipulate the small gnomes, stones, fairies and treasures on the table. There has been a lot of quiet conversations between the children as they play together and some lovely fairy stories have been created.
The children have enjoyed the space within the tent, often bringing resources from other areas of the room to play. We have observed the children talking and playing quietly with each other, cooking with items from the block & nature shelf or with the items from the home corner. Some groups have been cooking in the home corner and then bringing it across to the camping area for their friends to enjoy. It has been interesting to see how creative they can be.
The children have been quite adventurous in their outside play with many beginning to follow friends up and over the climbing frames or up the ladders to slide or jump off the pipe. The children using the mud kitchen have produced some delightfully mucky dishes for us to try. There have been some great interactions in this play space.
We have been investigating a range of natural materials at mat time and at the painting table as we talk about Autumn. Autumn is a great time of year to discuss the changes in our plants and gardens. Your child may talk to you about the changing colour of the leaves on the trees and how those leaves fall to the ground as it gets colder or the wind blows. The children are welcome to bring in Autumn items that they find to share with us or to use as part of our activities.
Family Photo: We still have plenty of room on our tree for family photos. If you would like to share a phot please send it in. The photo only needs to be a standard size photo (10cm x 15cm). The photo provides an opportunity for children to share with us a little about their family and makes a connection with them between home and kinder. Having a photo of their family can be reassuring and helps to build upon the children's sense of belonging to our kinder community.
Names on Belongings:  We seem to ask all the time but Please label children's snack / lunch boxes. This will help us when placing them out for the children and solve concerns when more than one child has the same container.
Children's clothing, including spare clothing in bags and hats need to be named. We have now begun a huge collection of items that cannot be returned as we do not know who they belong to. Please check the lost property box if you are missing anything.

Can you Help?
We would like small boxes for using at the craft table. Please feel free to recycle your boxes with us. (Please do not include boxes that have contained nut products or egg cartons)
Small soft drink bottles (600ml) to use for our Worm Juice. Washed and labels removed.

Any recycled paper for the children to draw on.

Thank you.
Our 3's information board is next to our door.  This board contains our program, helping list and any special events that are coming up. There are still some days free for you to help out so please take this opportunity to put your name down and join us for your child's session.  They really do love to share their play space with you. Also please check your pigeon hole for any further Pre-School information.
Illnesses: We are noticing a lot of the children are coming to Kinder when they are unwell. We would appreciate your consideration for others, if your child is sick, please keep them home until they are well. If your child does come to kinder and appears unwell we will ring you to come and take them home.
I hope you have been enjoying our Journal as this provides an extended look into the learning that takes place within our program. The photo's and descriptions are a good way of seeing the connections taking place and gives a picture of what is happening in our room. Your comments are most welcome, please feel free to make notes and include them in our journal. If you have other interests or areas that you would like us to include or that you would like to share with the children, please come and see us.
Already the weeks have gone so quickly and your children are learning so much.  We are looking forward to sharing many more experiences with the children throughout the term.

Joe's Rhythm Fun:                           Willow Group – Monday 6th June
Jacaranda Group – Tuesday 7th June
Joe's Rhythm Fun is an interactive music program that encourages the children to explore tone, pitch, tempo and rhythms by using their bodies, singing, dancing and playing different percussion instruments. Joe introduces the children to the parts of a drum kit and provides each child with the opportunity to play on the drum kit at the end of the session. I am sure this will be a huge ‘hit’ (pardon the pun) with children and of course the teachers!
Dental Checks: The children will be given the opportunity to learn a little about looking after their teeth, through discussions and stories.
Jacaranda Group – Tuesday 14th June
Willow Group – Monday 15th June
Reminders:
  • Our weather has turned colder so please ensure that your child has a coat / jacket to put on for outside play. Even when raining we will often go outside under the deck for a play.
  • Toilet Training: Some of our young friends are still in the process of being toilet trained. To help us better assist your child, please let us know at what stage they are up to so that we can follow consistent patterns at kinder and encourage your child's development in this area.
  • Remember to change over your child's spare clothes to suit the cooler weather. Please include socks and underwear.
     Four Year Old Report
Waratah & Banksia

Welcome back to all our families. The children have settled well back into our kinder routine and we enjoyed sharing stories about our holidays and Easter breaks. The children are gaining more independence and confidence, moving comfortably around the play spaces and showing interest in their learning environment.

Friendships are developing and we are observing many wonderful shared play interactions.  We focus on nurturing an environment where the children feel safe and supported, as our program continues to evolve from the children’s growing interests.

Our Program

The children have enjoyed many different learning experiences set up around our playroom. With a keen interest in dinosaurs, we set up invitations to use clay, dinosaurs, skeletons and a variety of natural materials. The children enjoyed using the clay with different tools, adding water, using other materials to extend and explore their creative ideas. Clay develops those small muscles in our fingers and hands and allows for sensory exploration.

Autumn, changing colours, leaves and trees have been another focus of learning and exploring. We added a variety of Autumn leaves, different shapes, sizes, textures and colours to our table experiences, which inspired paintings, drawings, leaf rubbings and also using magnifying glasses to look at the formation and patterns in the leaves. The children are aware that the seasons have changed and we have noticed leaves in our playground, we’ve watched leaves fall from the trees too. Other natural materials we have used in our planning have been sand at our light box, inspiring the children to make transparent drawings in the sand.

As an extension of our dinosaur focus, we have made our own volcanoes and watched them “erupt”, using bicarb soda and vinegar and adding colour.  The children were delighted and fascinated with our sand pit volcano. We have also added dinosaurs and dinosaur bones to our kinetic sand, which the children have enjoyed burying them and turning them into “fossils”.  This experience also nurtures sensory exploration.

We were also very fortunate to hatch our own butterfly pupae at kinder.  As an extension from our focus on mini beasts and also our discoveries from Bush Kinder, we watched 8 butterflies hatch from their cocoons.  The children learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly, from egg to butterfly and we watched butterflies emerge from the cocoon and then hold on tightly to the end of the cocoon until their wings were dry.

It was definitely a wonderful experience releasing the butterflies outside and watching them fly into the blue sky above.   An invitation to explore butterflies was set up with coloured sand that the children enjoyed using, inspiring the children to draw and sketch their own interpretations of butterflies.

We also set up invitations to explore concepts of reflection; patterns and we used mirrors, allowing children the opportunity to create their own patterns using a variety of materials. Discussions about sequencing, colours, patterns, and reflections soon evolved and the children created wonderful pieces.

We also grew mushrooms at kinder as an extension from our Bush Kinder program, searching for mushrooms.  We learnt about how mushrooms grow and we investigated the “gills” of a mushroom and how the seeds from the gill spread from the wind and land on the ground.  Then the rain makes the mushroom grow.  We watched our mushrooms grow and enjoyed cooking and eating them in yummy fried rice!
As an extension from discussions about our Easter holidays, we have set up our own “campsite” where the children have enjoyed going camping at kinder, sleeping in our tent and “cooking” on our camp fire.  It has been lovely to watch the children use their imaginations and dramatic play skills to interact in smaller groups, sharing the campsite and taking on roles in their play.

Anzac Day

The children enjoyed baking delicious Anzac biscuits at kinder.  We shared discussions about Anzac Day and what the day represents and it’s meaning.  Some of the children participated in Anzac Day marches and shared what Anzac Day meant to them.  We remembered the brave people that went to War and those that did not come home to their families.

We discussed the ingredients in the Anzac biscuits and that during the Wars, there was basic flour, oats and water to mix for the people to eat.

Dinosaurs & Fossils Incursion

Wendy from the Museum Outreach Program visited us and brought with her some amazing dinosaur bones and fossils for the children to see and touch.

Wendy taught us that palaeontologists are scientists who study fossils and dinosaurs.  Palaeontologists used the teeth from dinosaur fossils to determine whether that dinosaur was a meat eater  (carnivore) or foliage eater (herbivore).  Carnivores had pointy teeth and Herbivores had flat teeth.
We also got to put together a Chintosaurus leg, which nearly reached the ceiling of, kinder!  Everybody enjoyed measuring themselves against the giant bones!!  We have extended this program with dinosaur play, singing and building volcanos.

Cameras

The Banksia Group has been very interested in cameras.  This interest began with just one or two children making cameras out of recycled materials and has spread to most of the group.  To extend this interest, we asked parents if they could donate their old cameras.  We now have quite a few cameras that the children love to use in their dramatic play in the camping area or just to come up to a friend and take a photo of them.  We have discussed how much cameras have changed.  We used to have to put a roll of film in our cameras and we could only take 36 photos.  Then we had to take the film to the camera shop to get it developed, this sometimes took a week!!  We will further extend this interest by sharing kinder’s digital camera so that the children can take their own photos and share the results on the digital photo frame.

Planting Banksia and Waratah Plants

In recognition of group’s names, we potted Banksia and Waratah plants.  The children were able to see first hand what their group plant/flower looks like and touch and feel it.

Each child had a turn at putting some potting mix in the pot.  Once our outdoor space has been revamped, we will transfer the plants permanently into the garden.

Mid-Year Parent Teacher Interviews

Towards the end of May we will be offering our families the opportunity for mid-year parent teacher interviews.  This is an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have in regards to your child’s progress and development.  It is also a time to consider school readiness, to re-evaluate goals and share current interests with each other.  The timetable roster can be found next to the sign in book.
Celebrating Greek Easter
Waratah children learnt a little about the traditions of Greek Easter. Oliver Lowe’s grandmother and Kiah’s mum, Yoanna, chatted to the children about traditions and celebrations their families share at Green Easter.  It was wonderful to share and learn more about the children’s cultural backgrounds and how important this time of year is in their homes.  We welcome and invite our families to share family traditions, festivals, and cultural celebrations with us. It is such a wonderful way we support cultural competence in our programs.
Lending Library Program
The lending library program has begun at kinder.  The children have enjoyed looking through the library books prior to choosing one to take home.  Reading books and discussing the pictures in the story with your child promotes many pre-reading skills.  Talking about the front cover, which way the book opens and the pages turn and pointing to the words are all important for children’s pre-reading.  Always remember to keep it fun and remember that most children at this age are not reading and there are no expectations for reading these books independently.  Banksia Group returns and borrows books on Tuesdays. Waratah Group on Fridays.

Rex Visits
Our home visits with Rex (our kinder toy puppy) have begun and we have already had Rex returned from his adventures with one family!  These visits help to build the kinder/home connection.  When children share their adventures with Rex with the group, they are developing their confidence, self-esteem and expressive language skills.  Talking about Rex being with their family also fosters a sense of belonging and well being.  Please reassure your child that everyone will have a turn with Rex.

Bush Kinder
We have enjoyed returning to Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve this term and we look forward to sharing and exploring more of our Bush surrounds.  The children have become so familiar with the grounds at Yarran Dheran and have become so aware of the environment, the trees, the different walking tracks, where the dragon fly pond is, where our picnic ground is, looking up, looking down and noticing changes in nature.  It has been delightful to watch!  We were very excited to discover a new walking path at our first session back this term, walking down to Mullum Mullum Creek and finding small waterfalls along the river.  We also crossed a wooden bridge and our walk took us up steep and winding hills.

Please remember, with cooler, wet weather this term, we ask parents to dress their children in appropriate clothing and appropriate footwear.  Gumboots and raincoats a MUST this term.

We are asking that parents please ensure that your child has a water bottle and we ask that parents please take their child to the toilet before joining us in the Visitor Centre.

Change of Clothes
Please remember to send along a spare change of clothing in your child’s bag.  Kinder is such a busy, engaging environment and sometimes accidents happen!  Please label each item of clothing.

Please come and speak to us if you have any concerns, feedback or suggestions!

The 4 Year Old Team
Gumnuts

We have had a very busy start to Term 2. We are regularly welcoming new friends to our group, as well as preparing for Mother’s Day.  We are excited to have our Mums come in to join us for a little sing along and some morning tea.  We have also made them a little gift to say thanks for all they do for us.  We have had some discussions about our Mums and why we love them so much, and we have read stories about Mums.
The children have been enjoying lots of different experiences inside and outside.  Much of our play is solitary, but we are seeing more parallel play lately. Parallel play is when children play with another child in the same play space but they don’t necessarily communicate about their play, they play independently of each other.  During this type of play we are still developing our negotiation skills around some of the items in the play space and with assistance our sharing skills are growing.

Indoors the children have enjoyed exploring box construction, painting with cars and are still enjoying the trains.  Outside, the sandpit is very popular, as well as the lego and dominoes on the deck.

They have also enjoyed venturing down the yard further to our mud kitchen and climbing frame. Recently I thoroughly enjoyed a little performance from some children on the stage!
