RGHS Weekly Bulletin 6 May 2016

The first ever National Girls' Schools' Festival was hosted jointly by Wynberg Girls' and Rustenburg 16 years ago.  Accompanying the girls to Durban this year was simply a pleasure and it was wonderful to see how much this festival has grown over the years, with 23 schools participating in a variety of events.  The fierce competition that exists during the day disappears at the end of the day's play and is replaced by a warm, happy camaraderie and a really lovely atmosphere.

Our Rustenburg teams had a great opportunity to get to know one another better, get immediate feedback on their performances and hone their skills in their busy schedules over the four days.  I was immediately struck by two things:  how much our coaches/managers put into their teams and care for them and how close our girls become and how supportive they are of one another when they have the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time together as a team.

The value of team sport and group activities cannot be underestimated. As I have said before, these are the things that one will remember in one's adult years, long after leaving school.  I urge parents to encourage their daughters to be involved in activities outside of the classroom, building lasting, pleasant memories of their high school years.

When I arrived at RGHS 10 years ago, we were best known for our academic results.  I truly believe that we are now a school to be reckoned with on both the sporting and cultural fronts, apart from our exceptional academic achievements.  The "triumph of team spirit over individual brilliance" shines strongly now and we are able to take our place proudly, among  the best, in many different spheres.

Warm regards
Susan Schnetler - Acting Principal
