From the Headmaster

Tomorrow is our third and final Open Day of the year. The school is looking splendid at the moment and we look forward to welcoming our visitors and giving them a flavour of what an excellent education looks like.

The school has been buzzing with activity this week and the superb weather has lightened everyone's mood. Seeing the children in the outdoors extending their learning has been great to witness – long may it continue.

As a reminder, we are hosting a Forest School Activity Morning (10.00-12.00) on Saturday 14 May.  Anyone with children between the ages of two to five are welcome to attend. In addition, the PTA will be hosting their Family Golf Day at Gaudet Luce Golf Club on the same day.  All parents, children and guests are welcome to attend.
Enjoy the weekend sunshine!

Rumble in the Jungle (Book)

Yesterday on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Years 5 and 6 visited Malvern Theatre to see a production of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale, The Jungle Book. The show brought the story up to date and into the 21st Century with urban hip-hop music, breathtaking street dance and circus skills.

The children were treated to a modern interpretation with Mowgli finding her way in the urban jungle. With a beat-boxing bin man Baloo, graffiti artist Bagheera, gangster rapper Shere Khan and a skateboarding Wolf crew, this heart-warming story explored the topics of acceptance and believing in oneself. We watched in awe as performers from Cirque de Soleil and Zoo Nation spun, danced and flipped across the stage taking on the characteristics of the jungle animals.  Mowgli’s performance was particularly captivating as she tumbled, twisted and turned with movements that truly transformed her into the man-cub from the book.

Cheltenham Festival

On Tuesday 3 May the Chamber Choir travelled to Cheltenham to take part in the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts. The venue was the Main Hall of the beautiful Town Hall with its awe inspiring Corinthian columns and decorated ceiling. The choir sang the set song ‘Jubilate Deo’  followed by John Rutter’s  ‘A Magical Kingdom.’ Although the children were disappointed in not winning first prize for the third successive year, they should be proud of their excellent performance and extremely positive comments given by the adjudicator.
Well done Chamber Choir !

Wax Art

Year Three have had the privilege to work with Marie Therese King on two large batiks based on our history topic the Ancient Egyptians.  We learnt to put hot wax onto our outlines before using the dye to add vibrant colours.  They have now been displayed in school and we are very proud of our work.

Illuminated Letters

Year Four have been studying Anglo-Saxon illuminated letters. We researched what they are and how they were produced using the iPads and have been busy designing and producing our own versions.

Outdoor Learning

This week in English as part of Year Two’s Rainforest topic, we have been working on the wonderful story of The Great Kapok Tree, extending our use of exciting verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The children enjoyed retelling the story through the medium of role-play, making use of our amazing trees in the school grounds. The sun shone and with the sounds of the animals(!) ringing through the air it really felt like we were actually in the rainforest.

Charity Day - Friday 13 May

Next Friday there will be a school charity day in support of the charity mothers2mothers (www.m2m.org). This is a South African based charity dedicated to educating and empowering mothers to help stop paediatric AIDS within their communities. Dr Pia Wool, mum of Isabella Tipton in Caterpillars, has been raising money herself for this charity for a number of years. Having spent 2 years in Kenya setting up a safari Camp (Saruni Mara) and medical charity (Mara Medical Foundation) Dr Wool has seen first hand the life changing benefits and help that this money can bring.  She is travelling out to Malawi in June and taking part in a fundraising cycle ride. Isabella is also joining her. We wish them both luck and look forward to seeing them back at school after their trip to share with us their experiences.

Next week will be a Mufti day so the children need bring in £1.  There will also be a cake sale. However, it is a cake sale with a difference. Can I suggest as normal that children bring in no more than a £1 to buy some cakes but we will not be asking the children to donate any this time round.  I’m going to a busy man Thursday evening, I just hope my oven is up to it!

Time to Learn!

This week Year One have been learning to tell the time on a digital and analogue clock. We played the 'quick clock' game where you had to quickly write down the digital time when the teacher showed the analogue time and vice versa. It was a tricky concept to master but we got there in the end!

Farm Fun

This week has seen us begin our farm topic ready for our trip next week. The children have been very busy sharing ideas about their knowledge of farms and why farms are so important. We have begun planting different salads and talking about what we need to make them grow.

The children have enjoyed building various homes for the animals complete with slides, showers and a play park! In forest school we had a visitor come and join us in the African hut. The baby crow decided to join in with our circle time and Miss Lane was lucky enough to feed him worms which the children had found.

Running Success

Isabelle Thompson, currently in Year Five, has recently been celebrating success having won 2 gold and 2 silver medals.  She is a member of The Birchfield Harriers based at The Alexander Stadium in Birmingham and is ranked third in the UK for the U11 sprint. We wish her the best for the future events and we will keep you informed of her progress. Well done Izzy!

A Dream Come True

A once in a life-time experience and what better than to be playing in a national final at the Lee Valley Olympic Park, after gaining a place for a more mature team!  Yes, I was there, feeling extremely nervous, yet quietly excited. With music playing and announcements of the teams and players we embarked on a memorable 70 minute match against a team from Canterbury who won the event last year.  The game was great with the score at half time being 2-2.  In the second half, we seemed to up our game. Time ticking and we managed to score another 2 goals. The crowd were all behind us and it was such a relief as they counted down the time. What an experience and we are never too old to fulfil a dream!  I even got retweeted by the England Hockey Association!

Summer Health Update
As the sun has finally decided to shine please could we remind parents of our Golden Summer Rules

1.  Please ensure you apply once a day suncream to your child before they come to school, our policy states that if your child needs to re-apply suncream during the day they should do this themselves from a named suncream bottle.

2.  Please ensure your child has a sun hat in school at all times - preferably school regulation.

3.  Please ensure your child has a named water bottle in school at all times.  We are aware that some children are not drinking enough.  Squash and flavoured waters are not permitted in case they are spilt.

4.  If your child suffers from hayfever please could they take an antihistamine tablet before coming to school. The school nurse recommends Piriteze as this should last all day.
Many thanks.
