From the Headmaster
Tomorrow is our third and final Open Day of the year. The school is looking splendid at the moment and we look forward to welcoming our visitors and giving them a flavour of what an excellent education looks like.
The school has been buzzing with activity this week and the superb weather has lightened everyone's mood. Seeing the children in the outdoors extending their learning has been great to witness – long may it continue.
As a reminder, we are hosting a Forest School Activity Morning (10.00-12.00) on Saturday 14 May. Anyone with children between the ages of two to five are welcome to attend. In addition, the PTA will be hosting their Family Golf Day at Gaudet Luce Golf Club on the same day. All parents, children and guests are welcome to attend.
Enjoy the weekend sunshine!
Rumble in the Jungle (Book)
Yesterday on a beautiful sunny afternoon, Years 5 and 6 visited Malvern Theatre to see a production of Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale, The Jungle Book. The show brought the story up to date and into the 21st Century with urban hip-hop music, breathtaking street dance and circus skills.
The children were treated to a modern interpretation with Mowgli finding her way in the urban jungle. With a beat-boxing bin man Baloo, graffiti artist Bagheera, gangster rapper Shere Khan and a skateboarding Wolf crew, this heart-warming story explored the topics of acceptance and believing in oneself. We watched in awe as performers from Cirque de Soleil and Zoo Nation spun, danced and flipped across the stage taking on the characteristics of the jungle animals. Mowgli’s performance was particularly captivating as she tumbled, twisted and turned with movements that truly transformed her into the man-cub from the book.
Cheltenham Festival
On Tuesday 3 May the Chamber Choir travelled to Cheltenham to take part in the Cheltenham Festival for Performing Arts. The venue was the Main Hall of the beautiful Town Hall with its awe inspiring Corinthian columns and decorated ceiling. The choir sang the set song ‘Jubilate Deo’ followed by John Rutter’s ‘A Magical Kingdom.’ Although the children were disappointed in not winning first prize for the third successive year, they should be proud of their excellent performance and extremely positive comments given by the adjudicator.
Well done Chamber Choir !
Wax Art
Year Three have had the privilege to work with Marie Therese King on two large batiks based on our history topic the Ancient Egyptians. We learnt to put hot wax onto our outlines before using the dye to add vibrant colours. They have now been displayed in school and we are very proud of our work.
Illuminated Letters
Year Four have been studying Anglo-Saxon illuminated letters. We researched what they are and how they were produced using the iPads and have been busy designing and producing our own versions.
Outdoor Learning
This week in English as part of Year Two’s Rainforest topic, we have been working on the wonderful story of The Great Kapok Tree, extending our use of exciting verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The children enjoyed retelling the story through the medium of role-play, making use of our amazing trees in the school grounds. The sun shone and with the sounds of the animals(!) ringing through the air it really felt like we were actually in the rainforest.
Charity Day - Friday 13 May
Next Friday there will be a school charity day in support of the charity mothers2mothers (www.m2m.org). This is a South African based charity dedicated to educating and empowering mothers to help stop paediatric AIDS within their communities. Dr Pia Wool, mum of Isabella Tipton in Caterpillars, has been raising money herself for this charity for a number of years. Having spent 2 years in Kenya setting up a safari Camp (Saruni Mara) and medical charity (Mara Medical Foundation) Dr Wool has seen first hand the life changing benefits and help that this money can bring. She is travelling out to Malawi in June and taking part in a fundraising cycle ride. Isabella is also joining her. We wish them both luck and look forward to seeing them back at school after their trip to share with us their experiences.
Next week will be a Mufti day so the children need bring in £1. There will also be a cake sale. However, it is a cake sale with a difference. Can I suggest as normal that children bring in no more than a £1 to buy some cakes but we will not be asking the children to donate any this time round. I’m going to a busy man Thursday evening, I just hope my oven is up to it!
