Being Disciples, Making Disciples in the Name of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World

From Our Pastor's Perspective:

This week, we explore the dynamics of a young woman whose skill in divination is being exploited for economic gain. A story where Paul ask God to remove the spirit and ends up in jail for doing what’s right in God’s eyes. I cannot help but to reflect on another modern day economic sector that cries out for the indignation and action of our church. I speak of human trafficking- the exploitation of human beings for the purpose of forced prostitution, slavery or involuntary servitude. According to our State Department, between 600,000 and 800,000 people are trafficked every year with 80% of them being used in the sex trade and 19% in labor exploitation. The number involved in this industry is between 20 and 30 million individuals. The average cost for a trafficked individual for a day is about $90.00. The number trafficked in the US is estimated to be between 14,500 and 17,500 individuals annually.
The question for me is, what are we doing about it? Paul definitely did something about it when he cast out the spirit that possessed the girl. He took away the reason for her exploitation. Have we become so complacent, or perhaps overwhelmed, that we no longer see the injustice around us and become outraged? I hope that scriptural holiness still leads to social holiness in our lives, giving us a desire to think and act like Christ and leading us to compassion and motivation to change the world for the better.
Do we pray for the victims of human trafficking? Do we even think about them? If we do, there is something we can do about it. We can get involved. United Methodist Woman and Project Protect are working to raise awareness to the plight of those being trafficked around the world. There is a Human Trafficking hotline if you suspect that someone is being trafficked that is serving you (1 (888) 373-7888). Often those trafficked are employed in the service industries like nail salons and the hotel industry. The United Methodist Committee on Relief is also working to educate and to assist the victims of trafficking. Donations can be made under the Advanced Special: Anti-Human Trafficking, number 333615.

A child of God, no matter where they come from, should never be forced to make the decision between degradation and survival.

Mission Kits
We will be continuing to collect and make mission kits for Liberia. The goal for our district is 400. Our church goal is 12! The deadline to send in the kits will be May 26th.

The kits will need to include: (1) hand towel, (1) washcloth, (2) toothbrushes, pre-packaged, (2) tubes of toothpaste 6.4 oz or less, (1) bottle of lotion 11 oz or less, (1) bottle of roll-on deodorant, (1) small spray perfume that is non-aerosol, (1) bottle of shampoo 15 oz or less, all packed in a 2-gallon zipper bag. Then in the same kit, we also need (1) tube of antibacterial ointment, (1) bottle of Tylenol or acetaminophen 24-100 ct (no ibuprofen, caffeine based, or PM type drugs), and $5 for shipping.  If you have any questions, see Pastor Wayne, Nannette Feeback, or Rebekah Herron.

Mother's Day Flower Sale
Come, look at these beautiful arrangements! Our Mother's Day flower sale will be May 7th. All proceeds will benefit our building fund! The flowers will be delivered at 6:45 am on that Saturday. Volunteers will need to be there by 6:40 am. When passers by see the unloading, they will start shopping, so we need volunteers available! We will sell them until we are completely out!

Baby Shower for Jordan Taylor, 5/21, 1-3 pm
Join us for a baby shower, honoring Jordan Taylor, wife of Austin Taylor, as they get ready to welcome their baby boy to their sweet family! They are registered at Babies R Us, Wal-Mart, and Pottery Barn Kids. Please RSVP by calling 423-418-4205. “A small request, and we hope it’s not hard. Please bring a book instead of a card. It doesn’t matter if it’s well-loved or brand new. Either way your book will remind the baby of you. Write a sweet message on the inside cover and your words can be cherished over and over!”
