May 06, 2016

Welcome to the first Startup Digest on HR & Employee Experience. Each week we will be looking at a different component of what it takes to create and sustain a world class employee experience.

The focus for the first edition is teams. What is a team, and how do you make the best team possible.

If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.

Are you a team or a group?

Jon R. Katzenbach and Douglas K. Smith - Harvard Business Review

In 1993, Katzenbach and Smith published 'The Discipline of Teams'. They clearly identify that not every group is a team. The best teams combine a sense of purpose (emotional energy) and specific goals (to track progress).

Teams in sports and business

Tomasz Tunguz - Redpoint Ventures

Tomasz from Redpoint draws the analogy between high performance rowing crews and business. No matter how hard you compete to get on the team, you have to make sure everyone on the team wins. 'If one fellow in the orchestra was playing out of tune, the whole piece would be ruined.'

Google commissioned a multi-year study in to what makes the best teams

Charles Duhigg - The New York Times

The key conclusion was that the best teams respect each other's emotions, and make sure everyone has a chance to participate. On the surface this could sound trivial, but to male this work you have to understand how to create psychological safety.

eShares is run like a Professional Sports Team

Henry Ward - Medium

As part of onboarding at eShares, the CEO presents to new joiners on how they operate. There are some real gems in here, including 'Most companies find role models in other companies ... We model ourselves after professional sports teams. My question for you is, “What is the difference between a company and professional sports team?”'

Focus On Teams, Not Just Leaders, Is Key To Business Performance

Josh Bersin - Forbes

For Deloitte's annual Human Capital Trends report they surveyed over 7,000 companies globally. One of the key themes is that digital is disrupting the foundation of organisation structures. The focus is shifting more on to teams and how leaders can ensure they operate well together.
