Just Folk's Self Taught exhibition!

Just Folk is proud to present two simultaneous shows featuring the works of Self-Taught and Outsider Artists.

These terms are broad generalizations for art which is outside or isolated from cultural norms and conventional influences.  The work is created by artists on the psychological or social margins of society due to mental illness, geographical isolation, incarceration and disability.  Their work is self-taught and free from any influences of art education, museums and galleries.  It is instinctive and authentic.

On the first floor gallery,
the works of Thornton Dial and Gerard Cambon are featured.
Thornton Dial has been called one of the most important artists of the last century and his recent death in January 2016 has focused attention on the wide range of his work.  Gerard Cambon is a French government worker whose illness twenty years ago influenced his priorities; he began creating art from found objects. His home outside Paris is a studio filled with odd discoveries that he assembles into "locomobiles", ferris wheels and wall plaques inhabited by strangely appealing ghostly figures.  He is widely exhibited in Europe and Just Folk is honored to represent his work on the West Coast.

The new show in the upstairs gallery,

titled, Self-Taught Artists: Outside the Mainstream, highlights many diverse artists from our collection, including humorous and whimsical pieces by James Harold Jennings, Arthur Dial, Sulton Rodgers, Eddie Arning, Felipe Archuleta and many more.
