Message from the President, Dan Darnell

Participating in CGPS can be very satisfying and stimulating both professionally and personally.  Whether its’ attending a workshop, serving on a committee or the Board, or just helping with specific tasks, you can get involved in a way that fits your available time and interests.  The personal and collegial relationships that develop from being on a committee and attending workshops are very gratifying.

Most often engagement with the organization starts with a one-to-one connection with a board or committee member where you have a chance to explore what you would like to contribute.   Please consider talking with a board or committee member either at the spring workshop or by email about any ways you might be interested in volunteering and promoting group work.  With the video-conferencing capability we have now, members can also participate in meetings at a distance from their computers.

See below for offices, committees, and functions that we are looking for members to help with:

 Members At Large

  • Members at Large are Board members who serve various term lengths of one, two, or three years.  They attend Board meetings and actively participate in the governance and vision of Board meetings and the Society overall.  This is a call for nominations.  For details or to make a nomination please email Joan Seiffert at joanseiffert@gmail.com

 President-Elect

  • The President-Elect is a Board member who supports activities and tasks of the President and the Board and is active in the governance and vision of the Society overall.  This office is currently vacant and would have a term from current date through December 31, 2017, after which President-Elect becomes President of the Society for a two-year term.  This is a call for nominations.   For details or to make a nomination please email Joan Seiffert at joanseiffert@gmail.com

 Program Committee

  • Program Committee plans and organizes two annual workshops, designs marketing materials, and attends to administrative tasks that allow the workshops to run effectively.  It also envisions future workshop topics and presenters.  It helps organize other professional development activities such as the Core Course offering on group psychotherapy training and certification. For details, please contact Derek Easley at diggityderek@gmail.com

 Membership Committee

  • Membership Committee maintains contact with members, welcomes and follows up with new members, represent members’ needs to the Board, and encourages communication with membership at large and development of member benefits and events.  For details, contact a Board member (see list of Board members at end of Newsletter)

 Nominations Committee

  • Nominations Committee throughout the year approaches and encourages members based on their skill sets and interests to become involved in committee work and/or to hold office.  The committee presents to the membership for election by email vote a slate of candidates for officers of the Society.  Current chairperson is Joan Seiffert and new members are welcome.  For details, email Joan Seiffert at joanseiffert@gmail.com

 Technology

  • CGPS needs members with technology skills such as website design and management, developing and maintaining online registrations and databases, enhancing videoconferencing capabilities, developing and employing social media tools, helping other members to become more proficient with or to access technology, etc.  For details, contact a Board member.

 Professional Development

  • CGPS needs members interested in promoting training and certification opportunities in group psychotherapy such as the Core Course and supervision groups as well as promoting forums on professional issues in providing group psychotherapy for practitioners and the general public.  For details, contact a Board member.

 Marketing

Narcissism in Group Process Registration Now Online!

Nina Brown, Ed. D., Fellow of American Group Psychotherapy Association and author of “The Destructive Narcissistic Pattern” and “Children of the Self-absorbed,” will define and differentiate various forms of narcissism, and suggest identification strategies and ways for managing and containing the negative aspects of narcissism in groups. In the workshop we will play with these ideas about narcissism and explore how they show up in groups and in our own behavior.
