Hello to all. Another amazing month with 31 days to be the change you want to see in your communities. Did you make the most of every opportunity? I’ve had a month of “strategic thinking” and it confirms once again that successful communities “wait for no cavalry”. So I thought I share with you why.
5 reasons to not wait for a cavalry:
1. Who exactly are you waiting for?
Could anyone actually care more about your own community than you? Not many will have your community’s needs and desires in the front of their minds. So who exactly are you expecting?
2. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
The glacial pace of today’s ‘cavalry’ will rarely inspire the volunteers that you are so desperately trying to engage.
3. What would they know better about your community?
Your community should have a vision, as leaders make it your job to tell the story well and to anyone who will listen. You know it best.
4. Wouldn’t you rather do it yourselves, than have it done to you?
Sit waiting long enough, and the glacier might finally get to you with a “one-size fits all, off the shelf” offering. Be the leader who fashions that bespoke solution that others are envious of.
5. Nothing tastes sweeter than your own communities “fist pump” of success.
Success that was driven from the grass roots will be talked about for years to come. Keep high-fiving and fist pumping all the way to the awards ceremony!
Want to hear from others that ‘wait for no cavalry’? Why not join us at the 2016 VRCLP Regional Leadership Summit here in Bendigo (16-17 August). Registrations are open now, and the calibre of speakers second to none. Regional leadership at its finest.

GRADUATE CALL TO ACTION
As part of our graduate engagement strategy we are hoping that all LMCLP graduates who have a LinkedIn profile will take a few minutes (if you haven't already done so) to update your profile to include reference to LMCLP and your program year, eg. LMCLP 2003.
This will allow us to keep up-to-date with any career/leadership changes you undertake, as well as the opportunity to link to our new CLLM company page (which is currently a work-in-progress).

Wow, what a jam-packed issue of Enews. So many great events, initiatives for our graduates (and current participants if they have time) to get involved with. I particularly draw your attention to the VRCLP Regional Leadership Summit being held in Bendigo in August and attracting delegates from right across the state.
Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Collaboration for Impact Conference in Melbourne thanks to a scholarship provided by the Centre for Collaborative Impact.
This was a great opportunity to identify ways we can measure the impact of LMCLP, and to get the ball started in a very small way we are calling on all LMCLP graduates who are on LinkedIn to add LMCLP and their program year to their profile please. For example, my profile reads LMCLP 2003.
This is only a small action, but will help us to better stay in touch with what you have been doing since completing the program and to start to draw a picture of the collective impact of our graduate contributions across the region and beyond.
More elaborate measurement activities will begin in the next few months, but for now when you are next on LinkedIn please update your profile to include LMCLP.
Have a great month.

We were recently hosted in “Victoria’s Most Welcoming Town,” Heathcote (well, from the Great Vic Bike Ride perspective, and ours!), and then managed to get the inside low-down on “Australia’s Most Generous Town,” Castlemaine (according to National Australia Bank's Charitable Giving Index released in April 2016).
How lucky are we to have such great towns in our region? And each of them full, as usual, of inspiring stories, people, places, organisations and community spirit. We explored economic development and tourism in Heathcote which included an inspiring tour of Mandalay Mines – an organisation committed to environmental and community practices with an incredible leadership development program.
“Heathcote surprised me as each program day does. It was such a fantastic way to understand not just the town but the mining industry and how it can be approached in a more ethical and caring way, and the information about tourism from the micro to the macro perspective was fascinating,” said one 2016 participant.
“Great to see a community on the move! I saw a definite theme to the day of 'hard work and persistence',” said another.
The Castlemaine community showed us some of the health and well-being issues and opportunities face rural communities and we explored themes around ageing, living with disability, sport, mental health and integrated health services.
“I found the variety of the all the presentations provided a diverse view of community health. Although I have worked in most of these sectors I have never had the opportunity to have an open discussion with service providers and users of the service at the same time. The value and importance of lived experience in each of these sectors was a stand-out point for me,” said one participant.
For a couple of participants, this was the “best day yet.” More to come, I bet. Melbourne next.

LMCLP 2015 Re-Connecting Day
The 2015 group came back together last month to spend some time reflecting about their LMCLP experience, discussing leadership and updating each other on their community project.
Our Guest speaker for the day Jenny Dawson, who is the Chair of the VLine Board, was the perfect fit as she reflected on her own leadership story, focusing on some of her positions on high level Government and not for profit boards.

Stephen Dickons (2015) provided an update on his project. Fantastic progress has been made on the Community Kitchen at the Church on the Hill in Russel st Quarry Hill Bendigo.
A grant from the Bendigo Council helped with heating and cooling to be installed. The community group have also won a funding from Whirlpool for help with the purchase of kitchen appliances. Stage two of the project is underway with designs completed for a disabled toilet block which will replace the old brick out house. Well done Stephen, we look forward to seeing the completed Kitchen.

In May the Youth Leadership Program held their first webinar with Peter Dhu. Preparing for this webinar participants identified their top four challenges when presenting; managing nerves; not falling ‘flat’ in the conclusion; effectively using the presentation time, and using your voice. Peter tailored his webinar to suit these challenges and through the session provided even more tips and tools! According to participants some of the key messages were:
“The audience only sees 50% of the nerves you are feeling when presenting”
“The ‘Rule of 3’; and conviction, attitude, responsibility and energy”
“Learning how to be cool, calm and collected when it comes to presenting”
“The power of the pause”
With the Federal election in July, the Youth Leadership Program has rescheduled their Canberra trip to September and will be visiting Swan Hill in June.
