Highlighting Our Community

Take the Train to the Plane for Easy Access to the World!

The Train has arrived! More than two decades ago, visionaries planned for a new Denver airport with rail service that would connect the airport to the heart of downtown Denver. On April 22, that dream became a reality with the opening of the Regional Transportation District’s (RTD) University of Colorado A Line. The A Line includes a total of eight stations along the route, connecting millions of travelers each year with communities along the I-70 corridor and with future developments both on and off airport property. Passengers can also connect with the rest of the RTD rail network, along with local and regional buses, at the Union Station hub.

The Denver Airport station, which is the eastern end-of-line station for the A Line, is located at the airport’s new transit center, underneath the new Westin Denver International Airport hotel and conference center. Passengers stepping off the train need to walk only a short distance to an escalator, elevator or stairs that lead directly to the south entrance of the Jeppesen Terminal and the security checkpoints. No other airport in the United States can offer this incredibly short distance from the train to the plane. Once at the airport, you can connect to 175 destinations including 20 cities in eight international countries.

Exciting Community News!
District 11 Council Office has been working hard to create alternative solutions to increase food access in the community. And we have some exciting news...

UNFI Distribution will be donating 1500 pounds of produce to the No Cost Grocery Program through Denver Food Rescue to feed families identified in these locations: KIPP Montbello/ Collegiate Prep Academy at the Rachel B. Noel campus, Maxwell Elementary, and the Villages at Gateway (Albrook) Apartments located in District 8. The program will start May 5th, and continue every Thursday.

District 11 Council office would like to thank the efforts of Environmental Health, the Denver Food Rescue, and the Office of Economic Development. Through our collaborative efforts, we were able to make this happen.

Did you miss the Food Visioning meeting but want to add additional ideas, comments, or recommendations? Please send them to DenverFoodPlan@denvergov.org.

Improve your child's literacy through simple daily activities!

Write– Have a child write letters to their favorite storybook  characters. Parents can write letters back from the character.

Talk– Blowing bubbles helps build muscles in  lips, cheeks and the jaw  to help kids learn to talk  more clearly.

Sing– Singing songs  slows down language.  Children can hear the sounds better and understand that words are  made of syllables.  Itsy-bitsy spider, 5 little monkeys or Twinkle twinkle little star are always a hit.

Play– Children are very imaginative. Give them a normal object like a ruler or a block and see  what they imagine it to  be. Maybe it will become an elephant trunk or the most mysterious treasure.

Read– It’s important to have books around  everywhere. Have waterproof books for the tub and sturdy books in  a toy box. All should be  accessible for a child.

Volunteer for the Read Aloud Program

Volunteers will help to instill in them a life-long love of books that will help them in school and beyond.

The Denver Public Library's Read Aloud Program asks volunteers to visit a classroom once a week, usually for 14 – 17 weeks.

Visits typically last from fifteen minutes to a half-hour and take place during school hours.
