'During your working week, when you are talking to people, take the time to ask them what their challenges are, then ask them if they would like someone to give them a call that can help them with their challenges.'

Dear  <<First Name>>

Welcome to the May 2016 edition of your BNI Australia Newsletter.

We all have relationships from our past, many of which have lost their strength over the years simply due to a lack of communication. These people with who we've lost touch can be just the right people for your business - even if it may not seem like it at first.

In this newsletter, I’d like to share the importance of reconnecting with those from the past, people you once knew, or those you communicate with once or twice a year. When done right, rebuilding these once strong relationships can be incredibly beneficial to your business.

But first, congratulations to all the regions on a fantastic last quarter result. The image is included below in case you missed it on our Facebook Page.

Make Old Friends New Again

Each of us has people from our past who we've lost touch with over the years - whether it be an old work colleague or someone from high school or university.

In his book 'The 29% Solution' Dr. Ivan Misner explains the importance of reconnecting with those from our past, and how these relationships can benefit your business in unexpected ways. Share exciting news about your business with an old friend, but remember to always give something in return - a one-sided relationship is unlikely to last long.

Effectively Rebuild and Keep Relationships Strong

There's much more to reconnecting with an old contact than simply sending them a message on Facebook. When you get back in touch with someone you used to know, you're already a step ahead of when you begin to form an entirely new relationship - the person already knows you, knows the sort of person you are, and knows that you are trustworthy.

Keep all communications a balance of friendliness and business - although it's vital to follow-up with your connection, avoid pestering them with constant messages and calls as this can seem needy and desperate.

Check out How Not To Reconnect With An Old Contact, and discover some of the most common mistakes people make when reconnecting so you can avoid them.

Keep Track Of Important Relationships

When you have a large number of business contacts, it can be difficult to keep track of them all, especially as you reconnect with old acquaintances and build onto the list!

9 Apps to Help You Keep Track of Important Business Contacts offers some helpful advice for keeping track of important contacts using a mobile device while you're on the go. Using one or more of these apps is sure to keep your digital contact book neat and organised so you can easily find the connection you need when you need it.

Don't Let Your Networks Go Cold

No matter how much you network or the number of names in your list of business contacts, if you don't put any effort into maintaining the relationship, you may as well not bother networking at all.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Network From Growing Cold gives some great advice for maintaining these relationships, including adding personal touches to communications. If it's possible, try to meet face-to-face occasionally and keep in mind that although not all your attempts to connect will prove successful, maintaining a strong relationship with even 20% of your contacts will prove helpful to you and your business.

How do you approach reconnecting with old friends or colleagues? How do you keep track of your business contacts? What advice would you give to avoid letting networks going cold?

We are looking forward to sharing your thoughts and ideas on BNI’s social media channels. Email
social.media@bni.com.au for a chance to see your comments on our Facebook page or blog.

Until soon, in your next BNI newsletter edition.

Warmest regards,

Frederick Marcoux
