Week 18 - Tues,  3 May, 16
Lynette Palmen AMDear NO,

There is no doubt that our level of confidence and attitudes as adults towards money are cultivated in our early years. I was shocked when I read a recent report by the ACTU had found girls are receiving an average 11% less in pocket money than boys.

Interestingly, we so easily place blame on business and Government about the lack of value placed on women's work and their contribution to the GDP, but it seems we also need to take responsibility for what is happening in our own households. Pay inequality and career-breaks taken for family leave are certainly a barrier to women creating wealth, but so are ingrained attitudes.

It is well documented that the long term ramifications of unequal pay and career-breaks result in women having lower Superannuation balances. It's a sobering fact that currently 40% of single women retire into poverty and 60% of women aged 65 to 69 have no superannuation at all.

So what can be done to address the situation? Hopefully, Treasurer Scott Morrison will announce some policy measures in tonight's Budget that will address the significant gap in the superannuation savings of women and men. So let's see what happens there, BUT, if you have a daughter, you can also help to make an impact on her financial future.

A good place to start is taking the time to both sit down with her last Superannuation statement so you can familiarise yourselves with the various investment options within the fund. Considering your daughter may have 30 - 40 years before she reaches retirement age, she can well afford the luxury of considering the less conservative investment options available to her. Examine if other investment options within the fund might offer her a higher yield at this stage of her investing life cycle. After all, she may not even realise that she can regularly switch between the various fund options. Her Superannuation might be paid by her employer, but that doesn't mean she should treat it as a set and go scenario. As mothers we can make a major difference to our daughters future financial prospects by encouraging them to take an active interest in money matters and ensuring their Superannuation funds are working as hard as they do.

And what about yourself - who is supporting and guiding you? If you run your own small business statistics worryingly indicate that you may form part of the 55% who do not make regular contributions to your own superannuation fund. Why not change that situation today and open your own Superannuation account by calling your bank or financial planner.

Be empowered to take your own financial future off the back-burner - yes it's hard to break that life-long habit of paying everyone else before yourself, but the reality is you can start your own fund by contributing as little as $100 a month, so it is feasible. And you will be amazed at how it grows over the next 5 years.

Have a great week and remember – “Put your ideas on paper - it's like building a house, you put the plan on paper first".

Regards,

SOCIALLY unacceptable – business owners may need to re-examine their social media policies after the Fair Work Commission found one employee at a Tasmanian real estate agency unfriending another on the social network was evidence of bullying. It’s a lesson to all of us about how our social media interactions can make way into the real world.

NEW research indicates that most Australians are seeking more flexible working conditions but most are afraid to ask for them. The report also dispelled the myth that it is mothers with young children who were looking for flexible workplaces. It revealed that men (65%) were more likely to have flexible working conditions than women (59%).

MUMPRENEURS often balance family and work by basing their businesses at home. A recent Roy Morgan report revealed that mums who run their own businesses account for 16% of the Australian small business sector.
