Chigwell School holds Young Musician of the Year Competition
Ten Chigwell School students took part in the final of the school's annual Young Musician of the Year competition.
Musicians from across the school competed in the junior and senior categories.
This year's adjudicator was Emmy and BAFTA award winning composer John Altman who had the unenviable task of selecting the finalists who performed in an evening concert.
They were Myrtle Watts (piano), Rosie Singha (voice), Oliver Jackson (voice), Yasmin Antoniou (violin), Maddie Lovett (voice), Tamra Paul (piano), Rowan Jones (clarinet), Aaran Vijayakumaran (violin), Hana Edwards (piano) and Max Albert (voice).
In the junior category Rosie Singha received a ‘Highly Commended’ for her vocal performances while Rowan Jones was ‘Highly Commended’ in the senior category.
The junior winner was Oliver Jackson with his colourful and amusing vocal rendition of The Bird Catcher Song from Mozart’s Magic Flute, followed by his confident performance of Ständchen by Schubert.
The senior award and ultimate winner of the Young Musician of the Year title was Aaran Vijayakumaran for his technically intricate violin presentation of Sicilienne & Rigaudon by Kreisler and breath-taking musical interpretation of Ladies in Lavender by Nigel Hess.
Aaran’s prize will be to present the Concerto at the next Spring Choral Concert at Christ Church, Spitalfields, London, on Saturday, March 25 next year.
