Caddis Hatch on the Arkansas River
Spring weather in Colorado....Variable is an understatement! Every April, we can expect anything from 75 degrees and sun to sub freezing and a foot of snow....such is life in CO! This April we received 2 Spring snow storms that paused the Caddis Hatch. The first storm hit us the second weekend in April, and was followed by furious Caddis Hatch Activity for roughly 10 days....and then the next storm hit us (this past weekend). The great thing is that a cool down affects the Caddis Hatch like hitting the pause button on your tv remote. After the 1st storm, we saw the hatch startup right where it left off (Parkdale through Pinnacle Rock). In a very similar way, yesterday (the first warm day since the cool down), our guides witnessed a solid amount of hatching Caddis in the Texas Creek to Coaldale section (right where it left off). So, ladies and gents, we expect some more great Caddis Hatch activity this week...with the meat of the hatch residing in the middle of Bighorn Sheep Canyon (Pinnacle Rock to Coaldale). Depending on conditions, we may very well see some strong pupation and sporadic hatches in the Salida area...we will have to wait and see. Caddis pupation will most likely be very prevalent from Canon City through Salida. This past weekend, with the cooler overcast weather and periods of snow, our guides saw the most prolific BWO hatches we have seen thus far this Spring. With the amount of mature BWO nymphs in the substrate, that hatch activity will continue as well, rain or shine.

These last few cool downs in April will have one very positive affect on things...and that is delaying runoff. Most likely we will add a few extra fishing days to the bank. Snowpack is right at 100% of average as of today, but we may not see that snow come down the mountain until May 20th or even later! Of course we will have to see what the temperatures do over the course of the next few weeks, however, things look to be in our favor for 3 more solid weeks of GREAT SPRING FISHING!

Plan your days to get on North America's Longest Gold Medal River before runoff in late May!!
