ARC Spotlight

Celebrating National Small Business Week Across Appalachia

What do North Carolina’s North State Aviation, Alabama’s Fun Factory, South Carolina’s Spartanburg Meat Processing, Tennessee’s Alliant Corporation, and West Virginia’s Allegheny Science & Technology Corporation have in common? They are all run by Appalachian entrepreneurs who were named Small Business People of the Year in honor of the 53rd Annual National Small Business Week. Across Appalachia, entrepreneurs are starting and operating small businesses that are growing the Region’s economy. Last year, 108 Appalachian businesses made it onto Inc. Magazine’s annual list of fastest growing private companies in America. We know that for entrepreneurs to thrive they need skilled employees, robust support systems, and engaged communities. That’s why investing in entrepreneurial and business development  to strengthen the Region’s economy is a key element of ARC’s current Strategic Plan.

INVESTMENTS IN ACTION

Capitalizing on Solar in Virginia
BARC’s community solar installation is bringing renewable energy to Virginia’s Appalachian counties.
The BARC Electric Cooperative has been providing grid-powered electricity to rural southwestern Virginia homes since 1938. With ARC support, BARC recently began installing the state’s first utility-scale community solar project. The facility—big enough to bring affordable renewable energy to 180 homes and 25 businesses in the area—will also include a learning center, educational programming, and other community outreach activities. It will also create skilled jobs for solar installers and engineers. "Expanding our commonwealth’s renewable energy portfolio is a key piece of our efforts to build a new Virginia economy," said Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe.
