May arts news

Dear friends,

May is membership month at Heights Arts!  Please join us in supporting our amazingly artistic community by becoming a new member or renewing your membership today. In doing so, you will join the others who believe that what Heights Arts does is important enough to merit a financial commitment. Your membership not only helps Heights Arts do what we do to make our community better—it also offers you some particular benefits such as discounted concert tickets and special members previews.

This year, our members enjoyed discounts on nine sold-out events including Close Encounters chamber music concerts and At Table events with local chefs and artists. With your help, we hope to raise $25,000 this spring from individual members. Our need is greater than ever as we work to plan and implement the quality exhibitions and programming you expect. So please take a moment to renew or become a new member today and rest assured that your investment in us will allow us to bring out the best in your community.

Yours,
Rachel Bernstein, Executive Director

IN THE GALLERY

The Collector, Linda Ayala

Spotlight:
Linda Ayala

Opens Friday, May 6  6-9pm

A solo exhibition of drawings by Cleveland Heights artist Linda Ayala opens this Friday in our spotlight gallery space. Working in graphite on film, Ayala's new series of work reflects her interest in the relationship between food, medicine and nature. Dave King—gallery committee member and curator—notes, “Linda Ayala's intimate drawings have a sense of wonder and mystery. These highly detailed and sensitive drawings lure you to keep coming back for repeat viewing and when you do, you are rewarded with something new every time.” We hope you'll join us for the artist reception!

Things That Fly

On view through June 4

“This exhibition takes a simple concept—flight—and explores how different artists interpret that in a variety of media,” says curator Sharon Grossman. “Some research painstakingly, and then render their view of the natural world. Others have created their own artificial worlds and histories, which raise questions about what we believe and how we act.”

Come hear exhibition artists Stephanie Craig, Maggie Denk-Leigh, Lori Kella, Peter Larson, Lynn Norwood Lofton, Lynn O’Brien and Christopher Owen Smith talk about their work as part of Ekphrastacy on Thursday, May 19, 7pm.

The Merry Month of May = Membership

Heights Arts was founded on the premise that capitalizing on our rich artistic resources could positively impact all aspects of life: community-building, economic development, education, and public spaces. Our first collaborative project, the Coventry Peace Arch, reflects our community's creative spirit. Although originally founded to support local artists, we've become a regional presence for the arts, with 1/3 of our members residing outside of our city. JOIN US
