From the Committee

All teams get knocked down from time to time, but it’s whether and how they get up that defines their character.
You can always get something constructive out of losing and as the champion golfer Bobby Jones said: “I never learned anything from a match I won.”
Unfortunately, we also copped some injuries to young guns such that our resolve and depth will be sorely tested in the next few weeks.
We lost on the scoreboard but also the intensity and consistency of effort that was simply awesome in our first 2 games. Our leaders will step in to take responsibility for off field preparation and on field intensity. We will bounce straight back up.
The young B’s are struggling with the tempo and are not yet as clean with the ball as they need to be to occupy the winner’s circle consistently. But, they’ll get there as there have been, in all 3 games they’ve played, promising signs.
Luckily for C2 opposition, the C’s had a bye.
We travel to Portland this week with an opportunity to restore pride and that winning feeling. Please come along because although Portland is winless so far this year, it’s a very important game for us.

A Grade Match Report

OLD IGNATIIANS   17 .7  (109) defeated  SPOC  6 .13  (49)

SPOC Goal kickers; Luke Trenorden 4,  Charlie Wiggins 1, Brad Hartman 1

SPOC Best Players; Charlie Goldsworthy, Tom Butler,
Luke Trenorden, Harry Hayward, Brad Hartman

This can only be described as a disappointing performance, and the result on the scoreboard and in the records is a bad loss.
We began knowing we had several good players out, and there was a call particularly for our senior players to really stand up and set the standard in terms of courage, persistence and real character.
We were down 3 goals fairly early in the game, and then a series of devastating injuries all occurred very quickly resulting us having no players available on the bench. Nick Palmer has a serious shoulder injury, James Duncan a badly sprained ankle, and Sam Roberts suspected concussion after a heavy knock. On top of that Jake Gschwandtner has strained (? torn) abdominal muscles, and we finished the game with only 17 capable players. With those early injuries and being a few goals down, it was understandable that the boys dropped their heads and we did not really ever look threatening from mid way through the second quarter.
The boys certainly were made aware of the disappointment after the game, but were also encouraged to learn from it and look forward to this week on the track and the next game.
Charlie Goldsworthy was our best player, he kept getting better as the game went on, and his improvement throughout the season has been great. Tommy Butler was again terrific, his voice and reliability is really important. Big Luke Trenorden kicked 4 goals and did a fair bit of ruck work, - this was a terrific effort even though he was a bit down for not converting a few more chances. He is just a whisker away from a big bag of goals. Jimmy Duncan was very solid again until getting injured (he will probably miss a week at least,) and Harry Hayward is proving to be a great asset with a strong attack on the ball and ever reliable second efforts.  Brad Hartman continues to show his class with great skills and endeavor, and is also just a week away from a real cracker of a game.
There will be plenty of opportunity for the boys who are performing well in the Bs to be promoted and show their stuff, and despite having a total 11 players injured or unavailable, we (players and supporters) should approach this week’s game with confidence and enthusiasm.

B Grade

SPOC 5.6-36 DEF BY OLD IGNATIIANS 16.10-106
Best Players: P. Matsouliadis, A. Matheson, S. Stott, J. Hunter, T. Woodard, S. Giles
Goal Kickers: A. Matheson 2, E. Trenorden, D. Sawers, S. Giles

The B-grade came into Saturday hoping to register their first win of the season with one of the stronger teams listed this year with interim coach Jordan Florence-Rieniets taking the reins. With a few key in’s we were hopeful of getting the points against a quality opposition. Jords installed some structure to our on-ballers and midfield which proved successful in the first half. The B-grade were full of confidence coming into the half time break, however, we knew Iggies would come out firing in the second half. Unfortunately, we were unable to keep up our fantastic pressure from the first half and let the game slip away from us. Despite going down in the end, the first half was the best the B-grade have played all season. Coming into Saturday’s game with Portland, we will ensure this pressure and intensity is maintained for the whole game and come away with a big win!

C Grade
Had the bye last week but have a very important game vs Portland this week to keep our momentum going.
