May 1-8, 2016: Holocaust Days of Remembrance in Georgia

Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss

On April 19, 2016, Governor Nathan Deal signed a proclamation declaring May 1-8, 2016, as "Holocaust Days of Remembrance" in Georgia. Please click here to view the proclamation.

The United States Congress established the Days of Remembrance as our nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust and created the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) as a permanent living memorial to the victims. By Law, the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust is charged with holding an annual remembrance observance for the victims of the Holocaust. The 2016 theme is "Mothers and Fathers: Stories of Love and Loss."

On This Day: May 1945

May 5: Amsterdam is liberated by Canadian troops.

It has been nearly 5 years since the Netherlands was invaded by Nazi Germany. World War II is finally drawing to a close as Allied forces move through Europe. While the other Allied forces continue their push east towards the Rhine, Canadian forces focus on liberating large cities in the Netherlands. After many weeks of heavy fighting, Germany forces surrendered unconditionally in the Netherlands and Canadian forces liberated Amsterdam the next day.
