Hello from Downtown Lapeer

Hello and welcome to the first Downtown Lapeer e-newsletter. This monthly newsletter is designed to not only keep you up to date on what's happening in our Historic Downtown, but also to help get you involved. Each month we'll explore different downtown events, highlight special occasions, let you know what we're doing to grow our community and offer opportunities for anyone that wants to play a part in making our community great.
This first edition is designed to let you know what's coming up this summer in our Downtown. Future issues will not only continue to highlight downtown events, but will also include information on what we're working on to continue to improve our downtown community. We have an exciting summer ahead and we want you to be a part of it. Come join us and live, play, dine, and shop right here in Historic Downtown Lapeer.

Lapeer Car Cruise Returns
May 9!
The rumble of finely tuned engines returns to Nepessing Street in Historic Downtown Lapeer! Back for its 14th year the Lapeer Car Cruise has become a Monday night summer tradition for many in the Lapeer area. The final cruise of the season last year brought over 150 cars to the streets of Downtown Lapeer. All fans and enthusiasts are welcome - those with truly "classic" cars, as well as those with motorcycles or newer cars they want to display are all encouraged to join in the fun. Music provided by Young's Entertainment will have you dancing in the streets! This year's cruise will take place on Mondays from May 9 - September 12 from 6:00pm - 9pm with no cruises taking place on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The Lapeer Car Cruise is made possible by the support of local businesses and the generous sponsorship of Ross Automotive Supply, Inc.

Art on Nepessing St. Returns to Downtown Lapeer
Art on Nepessing St. returns to Downtown Lapeer this spring for a celebration of the arts! Hosted by the Lapeer Downtown Development Authority and The Center for the Arts of Greater Lapeer, Art on Nepessing St. is a three week long art walk that showcases artwork by local and regional artists inside downtown businesses. On June 1, Downtown will host a night of art with several participating businesses having extended hours so you can enjoy an evening walk through downtown. On the final weekend of the event, Nepessing street comes alive as it hosts the annual art fair between Court Street and Pine streets. The fair features a variety of art vendors, food from local eateries, a gallery tent, and live entertainment! Other activities include a silent auction inside the gallery tent, and a youth art tent on Saturday. This year kids will have the opportunity to paint a car!  It all adds up to a fun and exciting celebration of the arts in Downtown Lapeer and proceeds from the silent auction help support the Center for the Arts and Downtown Development. The event is made possible by support from many local businesses including generous support from Lapeer County Bank and Trust.

The "Hart" of Lapeer County
Here's some fun information to close out this first edition of the Downtown newsletter. The very first settler in Lapeer was Alvin Hart. Alvin and his family settled in Lapeer in November of 1831. During his first trip to the area Alvin and a group of men that were with him camped under an elm tree along Farmers Creek where it merges with the Flint River. During their stay Alvin and his companions brewed a pot of coffee. The pot got so hot that it burned and melted the pot. As a joke Alvin and his travel companions buried the coffee pot under the elm tree.Though the elm tree died back in 1925 the spot is now marked with a historical marker placed by the Lapeer County Historical society as well as tablet placed by his son, R.G. Hart.
