#FreshFacts shows export growth for New Zealand horticulture
New Zealand’s horticulture sector remains a stand out success within the primary industries with strong growth according to the latest edition of ‘Fresh Facts’ — the annual facts and figures booklet for horticulture data published by Plant & Food Research and Horticulture New Zealand.
Horticultural exports (including wine) increased 9.5% in 2015 to a record $4.3 billion, with productivity, new cultivars, strong branding and marketing all helping New Zealand’s fresh produce capture premiums in world markets. READ MORE

Climate change strategies for the primary sector
More than thirty scientists and business development managers from Plant & Food Research gathered for a workshop to discuss and develop strategies for addressing threats and opportunities posed by climate change to the primary sector.
The workshop involved strategic talks and presentations from academic and industry leaders to more clearly define how the primary sector can adapt to environmental change, either by mitigating its effects or identifying new opportunities. READ MORE
Front footing pest and disease risk
in Kiwifruit
A new project entitled ‘Integrated Kiwifruit Industry Security Technology’ with investment from the Catalyst Fund will support a joint New Zealand – China team to begin working together on a new research programme aimed at identifying new sources of resistance to major kiwifruit pests and diseases around the world. New study increases health evidence for kiwifruit consumption
New research conducted by Plant & Food Research has found that consumption of Zespri Kiwifruit, in addition to previously known health effects, may also significantly slow and reduce the uptake of sugars into the bloodstream.
The research studied the glycaemic impact on people who ate kiwifruit with their breakfast, and found that people who ate kiwifruit with their breakfast saw more regulated blood sugar levels. READ MORE
