Happy Event on Quinton Pools
We’re pleased to report that, for the third year running, our swans are proud parents again. This time they have six cygnets! In recent weeks, residents will have seen the mother swan sitting on her nest on the island. Thankfully the Council now realise that putting a bale of straw onto the island really does encourage the swans to nest there, in safety.
New Refuse Bin Labels
Several residents have queried last week’s item concerning the Bin Labels.
Here is a response from Ms Layla Shannon, Senior Waste Management Officer
We have a page on the website http://www.coventry.gov.uk/bintags which aims to answer common questions related to the new bin tags.
With regards to a bin that is too heavy, this is determined by whether it is suitable to be used by the lifting equipment on the rear of the vehicle.
London Road/ A444 Roundabout Markings
Traffic Management are proposing to refresh the road markings at the London Road/A444 roundabout and at the same time will be making some changes to the lining.
See the diagram of the proposed road markings.

Styvechale and District Residents’ Association
Roger was invited to the AGM of the Styvechale and District Residents' Association, which covers both Styvechale and a part of Cheylesmore. He had the opportunity to talk to a number of local people.
The association continues to support local residents in a variety of ways and is the main supporter of the yearly Styvechale Open Gardens event held each June. The evening concluded with a talk by David Fry on local history and Roger was fascinated by the 1930s photos of Cheylesmore.
A45/A46 Tollbar Improvement Scheme Road Closure:
From Alan Jones, Galliford Try
I am writing to advise you of overnight road closures that have been re-scheduled for the A45/A46 Tollbar Improvement scheme. These closures are required to ensure the safety of the travelling public whilst carrying out these works.
A45 Stonebridge Highway
The A45 Stonebridge Highway westbound will be closed between Stivichall junction and Tollbar roundabout:
- 2 nights from 23 – 24 May from 8pm until 6am the following morning.
Diversion map and route
The A45 Stonebridge Highway eastbound will be closed between Stivichall junction and Tollbar roundabout:
- 2 nights from 25 – 26 May from 8pm until 6am the following morning.
Diversion map and route
Both road closures are needed to allow for the pressure cleansing of the road drainage and to carry out surveys of this drainage.
The closures will be published on the Highways England website and the diversion routes will be clearly signed. The planned closures may be cancelled or extended in the event of inclement weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
If you require further information please contact the Highways England project team at A45A46TollbarEndImprovement@highwaysengland.co.uk or visit www.highways.gov.uk/a45a46tollbar
Japanese Knotweed in the London Road Cemetery (LRC)
Last week, at the London Road Cemetery tidy-up day, Pauline (the editor) was introduced to Japanese Knotweed.
Derek, the LRC tree expert explained that
- The plant isn’t poisonous. They actually eat it in Japan.
- It originally came from the volcanic rocks in Japan so can grow anywhere
- Its roots are up to 10 feet long & can crack foundations
- The tiniest fragment of the plant will propagate another plant
- It’s one of our most invasive plant species
- Plant fragments are transported by rivers & railway lines, hence the plant being in the cemetery
- Soil or compost containing Japanese Knotweed will spread the plant
- The plant is very difficult to kill
We were asked not to touch the plant as the Council had been informed & would be treating it shortly. Also Derek didn’t want us contaminating the waste piles.
Over 15 people helped at LRC last week ranging in age from 8 up to 80. We continued to clear the laurel & elder and had much to show for our efforts.

Ant Problem
A resident asked if the Council could help with an ant problem.
This is the reply from Julie Gallagher, Pest Control / Animal Welfare Officer
The pest control section can treat ants but only ones that are inside, we do not treat ants in the garden.
If a resident has ants in the house they can call Coventry Direct to arrange for an officer to visit.
The charge for this service is £75.00 or if the resident is in receipt of benefits it will be £37.50.
