First Sunday after Pentecost: Trinity Sunday

Trinity Sunday

On Trinity Sunday, we celebrate the revelation of God in Three Persons: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (or Spirit). Though we encounter the three persons of the Trinity in passages like our reading from John (16:12-15), the Bible does not clearly spell out a doctrine of how God is one and yet three. This is one of the sacred Mysteries of the Church, and one that will not be fully understood in this life by the limited human mind. In fact, the first 300 years of the Church were marked by sharp controversies over the nature of God. Struggles to express a basic understanding of Jesus as both human and divine, understanding the Holy Spirit to also be divine, upholding the basic confession that the Lord is One (Deuteronomy 6:4) resulted in the confessions of faith in the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds.

While the Trinity is not to be fully understood—for God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable (Job 36:26)—the Triune God is rightly the object of meditation and contemplation in our journey toward understanding. Our guides in this exploration are the revelation of God in the Bible and the person of the Holy Spirit, who was sent to lead us into all Truth. This study leads us into the true nature of love, because God is love. Conversely, when we love authentically, we grow in our understanding of the God who is the source of all love.

As the truest expression of love, the three persons of the Trinity are always seeking to give to the other. This is stated from the Spirit’s perspective in the blessing at the end of the Eucharist, “May the Spirit of Truth lead you into all Truth, giving you grace to confess Jesus Christ as Lord and to proclaim all the mighty works of God.”

Blessings in the name of the Triune God,
