'Out And About' With Matthew Lunn
A warm welcome to our latest eNews. It has been a hectic few weeks since I joined!.
 
The Perth Garden Festival has been and gone and I am pleased to report the feedback has been positive. This event has huge potential and I have already made it clear to our Board Members and industry partners that we must all work together to ensure that this is one of the highlights of the WA calendar, but also it can rival similar events here in Australia with the right planning. Gardening and a healthy lifestyle will never die out. We just need to move with the times for how this should be presented at the Festival.
 
I have thoroughly enjoyed getting out and about on the road meeting members, attending meetings and more recently being a part of the latest NextGen function at Ellenby Tree Farm. As you will have discovered I am very much a hands-on person so even if I’m sitting in an old shed with a cuppa chatting with you or walking up and down rows of plants I will always be enthused.
 
I am delighted to announce a couple of immediate initiatives. The new NGIWA website is currently being built and should be up and running by July and on the 29th June, I will be hosting our first members' breakfast. So please watch out for your invite in the post and put it in the diary.

Finally, I have been overwhelmed by your welcome but also your positive outlook in seeing this Association moving into a new fresh era under my leadership. I thank you all.

Member Profile - Nuts About Natives
Nuts About Natives is a small contract based wholesale plant propagation business which has been operating since October 2000. Under the ownership of Ben Croxford and Anouska Cousin they focus predominantly on indigenous plants from south-west WA, however they also grow some other Australian plants and South African Proteaceae.
 
Each year they propagate hundreds of species for clients including garden centres that specialise in native plants, community groups undertaking revegetation works, local councils, cut flower growers, landscapers, scientific and other government agencies. As well as contract propagation they also do flora surveys of bushland in the South West, advise on species for revegetation works and collect and supply provenance specific plants to ensure the genetic integrity of wild populations.
 
Their business is located on a 2.5 ha property 50km south of Perth at Karnup. A portion of the property has been set aside for biodiversity and conservation with more than 120 different species of indigenous flora and more than 40 species of birds .
 
Ben and Anouska are not only members of NGIWA, but their nursery is fully accredited by the Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA).
Perth Garden Festival Winners
Congratulations to all who took part in the Perth Garden Festival 2016 show gardens and exhibit displays - they were awesome!  Also a huge thank you to all our members who exhibited at the show.  Feedback has been fantastic (both from exhibitors and visitors) despite the wet weather.  We are looking forward to bigger and better things at PGF 2017 - watch this space!!

NGI Structure Review Committee Visit - Tues 14th June
The Structure Review Committee will be hosting consultation meetings with industry across the country over the next three months.  These meetings provide you with an opportunity for you to share your views with the Structure Review Committee.

Facilitation of the meetings with industry stakeholders is one of the major data collection activities being undertaken by the Committee as part of their broad ranging, whole of industry review to assess the current structure of the nursery and garden industry in Australia and make recommendations for the future.  

The Committee will be in Perth on Tuesday 14th June and you are invited to attend:-

Green cities are beautiful cities, healthy cities and resilient cities.

Strategic Investment Advisory Panel

The first meeting of the Strategic Investment Advisory Panel for the nursery industry was held in Sydney recently. The panel is made up of growers and industry leaders including NGIWA President Carole Fudge, and one of its main tasks is to assess research proposals against the industries priorities.

Several proposals have been put forward for consideration, with the panel deferring a decision until some are resubmitted with further information.

Also on the agenda was a session focussed on how the industry and its partners are communicating research and development to levy payers and the channels they’re using to connect with growers.

The team behind the 202020 Vision provided an overview of the activities and achievements to date, and presented its strategy on where the project is headed in the next 12 months.

An independent chair is still to be appointed to oversee the smooth conduct of meetings, manage governance procedures and ensure the objectives of each meeting are achieved.

The chair of Horticulture Innovation Australia Limited has confirmed that any research proposals for the nursery industry need to go through the panel, and anyone with ideas on R&D is encouraged to submit a concept form through the Hort Innovation website.
Pest & Disease Workshop 
On Friday 22nd April, NGIWA in conjunction with NGIQ and DAF presented a half day Pest & Disease workshop entitled "Crop Monitoring and Advanced IPM" held at Apace Aid WA in Fremantle.

Those who attended learned how to monitor for pests and diseases including practical monitoring exercises on farm; how to develop a basic integrated pest management plan; joined a farm-walk to see first hand how our host nursery manages their farm in relation to pest and disease management and most importantly, what to do following the detection of a pest or disease.  We had some very positive feedback following the workshop including this from Michael Gorman, Nursery Supervisor for City of Stirling:-

"I found the workshop very interesting, informative, and useful. The highlight was definitely the ‘hands on’ activities which involved plant pest and disease identification within the nursery, with some of the methods learnt being easily transferable for use in my own nursery. The two presenters, Andrew and John were also both very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly in the way they delivered the workshop."
 
NextGenners Learn About Tree Selection For Landscape Use
Last week, Ellenby Tree Farm hosted a group of enthusiastic NextGen nursery and garden industry people at their Gnangara retail nursery including TAFE students, landscapers, tree surgeons, local government and horticultural product suppliers. The focus of the workshop and tour was to highlight what to look for when choosing quality trees for landscape use. Craig Woodroffe from Ellenby Tree Farm talked about appropriate stem calliper sizes on advanced trees in comparison to the pot size they are in, the new Australian standard-trees for landscape use, the implementation of permaculture principles in their nursery, and the stunning array of Grafted Corymbia ficifolia's, now once again available in Western Australia.

Overall the workshop was very well received by all, with many interesting discussions and questions happening throughout the day.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Craig and the team from Ellenby Tree Farm and the NextGen Nursery and Garden Industry Group for hosting the event.

NextGen is an NGIWA initiative with the main focus on encouraging the next generation of nursery and garden industry employees to become more involved and passionate about their industry. NextGen is open to those aged 18-45 who are currently working or studying within the nursery and garden sectors. Garden Centre Coffee Capsule Recycling Program
Garden centres are encouraged to consider joining the Nespresso Recycling Program in an effort to reduce the amount of coffee machine capsule waste.  As part of the program, garden centres are provided with collection boxes which are delivered and collected at no cost to the centre. By filling and returning three recycling boxes Nespresso will provide the participating garden centre with a free coffee machine!

My Weedwatcher
The general community and community groups can now use smartphone and tablet devices to identify, survey and report weeds and view results online. MyWeedWatcher enables users to identify weeds, conduct surveys on weeds of interest and report on the presence of declared weeds.

The identification guide allows users to quickly search for a weed according to plant characteristics such as flower colour, leaf shape, and plant type.

The survey/reporting feature enables users to map weeds, add images and record survey data such as weed density, weed counts, confidence of identification, and notes on control activities done.
