Generous Living
My brothers-in-law both love nice cars. One year, we were all vacationing in Yosemite and my brother-in-law pulled up in his latest nice car. He said “Erin, take it for a drive. We’ll drive together to Starbucks in Oakhurst!” For a guy whose version of “luxury” is air conditioning, this car felt like I crossed over into the rich and famous. I was admiring the leather seats, the grip of the steering wheel, and sighed with joy as I felt the tires hug the curvy road down the mountain into town.
As I pulled into the Starbucks parking lot, something happened. I felt like everyone was checking me out. I felt like I was way better looking—even a bit smarter. I felt like if someone wanted an autograph, I wouldn’t turn them down. Wait—what’s wrong with me?! My brother-in-law’s generosity to share in the joy of his new car had revealed something in me. My heart, in a span of a mere 30 minutes, had shifted from enjoyment to idolatry...

Making a Difference Through Serving
As I’ve reflected back on the last twelve months, it’s become clear to me what my purpose is as I serve in the Kids Ministry. Justin was a new boy being dropped off, with clear separation anxiety. He was fearful of being left with people he did not know. Sam, a four-year-old regular attender, comforted Justin, embracing him with love, grace, and empathy and leading him during transition times. Justin was shown love and acceptance, the same love and acceptance that Sam had received from his Sunday School volunteers.
All our volunteers create a safe and welcoming environment every week. Sam had seen this week after week and was now able to welcome someone new himself. Children's Ministry is much more than telling a Bible story. It's about fostering a faith environment in which everyone feels included, loved and safe. Your service matters! You can make a difference!
