Capital Project Update

May 12, 2016

Welcome to the third installment of the Hudson City School District Capital Project eNewsletter.

Since the district's voters approved this major infrastructure improvement in February 2016, our team--the Board of Education's Facilities Committee, Superintendent of Schools, Superintendent of Building & Grounds, central and building administrators, and members of the faculty/staff--has been working diligently to lay the groundwork in order to begin the important effort of bringing the community into the dialogue.

As you recall, voters approved a $20 million project that includes:

  • New building addition at the current Intermediate School
  • Close JLE Primary School and move Pre-K-2 to the new building
  • Relocate 6th grade to the Jr. High School
  • New track/field behind the Jr./Sr. High School
One of the important preliminary undertakings so far has been a close internal accounting of all personnel and space requirements so that Rhinebeck Architecture could refine the initial drawings of the Pre-K to Grade 5 building.

Additionally, engineers from Weston & Sampson have been working on environmentally sound design options for the storm water runoff (based on survey results of the area surrounding the existing Intermediate School). The survey results will also provide the City of Hudson with the information required for the transfer of City-owned property to the school district (as discussed prior to the vote).

A traffic study was also performed by T.R. Johnson Engineering, PLLC to gather vital information in order to help architects design traffic flow with the least amount of impact on both campuses. Once the results of the study are received, we will discuss design plans at future meetings.

The preliminary rendering of the track/athletic field has remained relatively unchanged, except for some consideration of positioning options to address accessibility, grading, sun and cost. The field surfacing options have not yet been discussed. We are in the process of gathering information about the pros and cons of natural and synthetic turf surfaces, which will be a topic of discussion at the public meetings scheduled for May 23 and June 6.

Rhinebeck Architecture has collected enough information to date to produce a preliminary drawing of what the exterior and interior of the newly configured Pre-K to Grade 5 building could look like, how we can economically and environmentally address the storm water runoff, and our options for the positioning and design of the track/athletic field.

Now the important part: The Public Meetings

On May 23 and June 6 (both Mondays), Rhinebeck Architecture will be informing the Hudson CSD Board of Education of the progress and vision--and we want the public to be there. Presentations will begin at 6 p.m. in the Jr./Sr. High School cafeteria with time allotted for questions and input (see additional information under "Upcoming Events").

The public is encouraged to attend at least one of these meetings (the presentation will be the same at each; the discussion, no doubt, will be different at each) so that a baseline of information can be shared with interested parties.

There will be multiple opportunities for continued public participation at subsequent meetings as well. As a subscriber to this eNewsletter, you will be fully informed. If you know anyone who would like to subscribe, please contact Meghan Tice at ticem@hudsoncsd.org

You will find other documents related to the project, including a tentative timeline, at our Capital Project webpage.
