Several of the students in our technical and artesian training program are working hard to make traditional Guatemalan headbands to sell to teams visiting Agua Viva this summer. When the children work on a project to make money, they receive a portion of the earnings and the rest are invested in a savings account so that when they are older and move out on their own they have a small nest egg to help them get started in their new life. We are proud of these children and all their hard work. For those traveling to Agua Viva this summer...make sure to look for these headbands in the store!

In Guatemala, “futbol” (soccer) is a BIG deal and it is no different at Agua Viva. Agua Viva’s soccer teams practiced hard to be ready for any chance to play, so they were excited to be invited to play in competition. They played both indoor and outdoor games and both our boys and girls teams won first place to bring home a total of four trophies. Way to go Agua Viva!

Angel grew up just outside the Agua Viva gates and always wondered about the children living inside. He dreamed of attending the Agua Viva School to get a good education. Earlier this year Angel came to live at the home and attend the school. Although Angel doesn’t have a specific career in mind for the future, he does want to be able to help his family one day.

|
Angel has always been an active child. His favorite part about living at Agua Viva is feeling safe and being able to play outside. He likes knowing that when his shoes wear out, he will be able to get newer ones.
Angel has made many new friends with the boys in his house and enjoys talking with his house parents about life and faith. He looks forward to interacting with all of the visitors from North America in May-August.

This year we started a transition home in Chimaltenango for six of our older boys as they finish high school. House parents Julio and his wife, Berta, have a huge heart to serve teenagers and work hard to get the boys ready to live in the outside world by teaching them responsibility and independence.

According to Julio, the boys need to learn to take initiative. Growing up at Agua Viva, their day was usually planned out for them but now they must learn how to get things done without being asked. The boys also attend weekly Bible studies with Pastor Benjamin, former pastor at Agua Viva. He has worked with the boys to find areas of interest and has them over for family dinners and biblical discussions to help prepare them for the future.

Life After Agua Viva: Antonieta

Antonieta entered Agua Viva
in 1993 with her two other
siblings, Juana and Lucky. After
10 years at Agua Viva, she
graduated from high school and
moved to the Guatemala City.
She pursued a nursing degree
in Technical school and then got
a job at the national hospital
“San Juan de Dios” where she
has been working for 8 years.

Antonieta now has a two year old boy named Joseph. Whenever she is able and has time off, she likes to stop by the home for a visit.

Our group of five men representing three different churches came to Agua Viva during the first week of April to repair and replace various items throughout the home. The team worked all day and into the evening from Monday through Thursday night.

During those four days over a hundred light fixtures were replaced and more efficient fluorescent light bulbs installed. Security lighting around the exterior of some of the buildings was repaired as well. Tubing for the LP gas system in the kitchen was replaced with new copper tubing and valves to provide more efficient and safer gas supply. The kitchen staff noticed the difference and was very appreciative. The first morning after the modifications were complete one of the cooks thought there was a problem because the stove flame was so much bigger and brighter than before. We assured her that everything was fine and she was very pleased with the change. Other projects included changing out bathroom sink drains, repairing playground equipment, modifying some flushing mechanisms in Casa Josue and cleaning up the pump house.

Just as we shouldn’t neglect the maintenance required to keep up the infrastructure at Agua Viva, we all need to pay attention to our daily walk with the Lord through prayer, Scripture reading, and acts of service to those the Lord puts in our path.

Congratulations to Mrs. Abbey Miculax on her recent marriage to Elmer Miculax. Abbey will continue teaching English at the Agua Viva School through the end of the year. Please pray for Abbey and Elmer as they adjust to their lives together and seek the Lord’s guidance for the future.
