Editors Note:

Oops! There appears to have been a few mistakes in the previous edition of this newsletter regarding the NZ dotterel breeding results. It's funny how a few numbers in the wrong places can give totally different results. I'm pleased to say the updated results gives us an even better regional result. Apologies for sending this again but I thought you would appreciate the very good news for all!

Issue Eight (second edition) - May 2016

Welcome to the eighth issue (second edition) of our regional newsletter

Sorry about the delay in getting this newsletter out. It has been a busy time with the third annual Auckland NZ dotterel minders forum happening last month. It was great to see so many of you attending what is becoming a very successful event. A further summary from the event is below.

Thank you to those who sent through your NZ dotterel results from the last breeding season. By sending in your results, you contribute to a collated view of how successful NZ dotterel breeding is across different regional sites. The more results, the better the view is, and the better we are able to contribute to the national picture.

Here's a quick summary of the 2015/16 regional results

  • 107 fledged chicks were produced from 131 breeding pairs
  • This gives a regional breeding success result of 0.82 chicks per pair
  • Effective breeding success for sites with management usually produce 0.5-1 chicks per pair
  • This is an improved result from last season's 2014/15 year of 0.69 chicks per pair

Thanks again for all the effort and time you have all put in to help protect our NZ dotterels. This improved result shows that the management of these sites is working, and illustrates that it can only have been achieved by the effort from volunteers and staff.

Below is a more in-depth look at what is happening around the different breeding sites across Auckland:

If you have any interesting NZ dotterel observations you would like to share with the group, please send them through to me at ben.paris@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. Photos are welcome too!

Auckland NZ Dotterel Minders Forum

On 28th April, Omaha Shorebird Protection Trust, Birds NZ, and Auckland Council teamed up to put on the 3rd annual Auckland NZ dotterel minders forum at Omaha. This year we were privileged to have Dr John Dowding give us an update on NZ dotterel around the country. One of the clearest messages in John's update was that the biggest growth in numbers is in Auckland and Coromandel where the community minders are supported by Council and other organisations. Great to hear we're heading in the right direction.

Here's some of the feedback we received:
"Just to say I really enjoyed the ‘dotterel forum’ and found many aspects of Johns talk useful in gaining a greater understanding of the birds and their habits at Shoal bay and on sites further afield in NZ."

"In the field you see things happening day after day but when there are so few people monitoring a site in an unofficial way it is hard to confirm that what you are seeing is in fact  true to dotterels in general.  People like John help solidify knowledge that minders gain in the field."

A big thank you to John Dowding, Marie, Gwenda, Shaun, John Stewart, Jacinda and Andrew for helping make this event possible. Stay tuned next year for details on our next forum...
Auckland NZ dotterel minder news

At the recent forum, an update was given by John Stewart (Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi Island) on the new Engraved Leg Flags (or ELFs for short) that are being used instead of traditional bird bands. These new ELFs were put on the tibias of two unfledged NZ dotterel chicks last season, including one on Tiritiri Matangi Island. Any ELF sightings should be reported to Adrian Riegen (riegen@xtra.co.nz) and the Department of Conservation banding office (bandingoffice@doc.govt.nz).

I also have a stack of NZ dotterel brochures if anyone wants any. Please let me know how many brochures you require. You can also directly download them from the Auckland Council website.
