Information about what can be put into each bin is on the
council website.
Double Yellow Lines in Whitley
Roger asked officers for an update on the double yellow lines proposed in Whitley.
From Joel Logue, S.Engineer – Traffic, Highways and Road Safety
Phase 1 - Leaf Lane (Whitley side) is operational and we have received lots of positive feedback – so it has finally resolved the many problems experienced by Leaf Lane users.
Phase 2 - I am currently working on the double yellow lines for the corners in Whitley – which is slightly hampered by us moving towards a new TRO (Traffic Regulation Order) system – but I will email you the proposals once they have been finalised.
Cheylesmore Residents Parking Scheme
A number of residents have been asking Roger for an update regarding the recent review of the Cheylesmore Residents Parking Scheme, especially interested were those who have signed petitions in The Hiron, Benedictine Road, Lichfield Road and Glover Street.
He was informed that there has been a delay, which has been compounded by the elections and a change of chair to the Public Services cabinet position.
We will keep you updated as soon as we hear anything.
Whitley Bridge – Illegal Left Turn
Roger continues to contact officers about the problem of cars taking an illegal left turn on the Whitley Bridge.
From Joel Logue, S.Engineer – Traffic, Highways and Road Safety
I can confirm that various signs have been installed at the Whitley junction - to prevent drivers abusing the left-turn prohibition, and this is currently being monitored.
Although initially assumed that the left-turn manoeuvre abuse only occurred at peak times (when drivers conduct this manoeuvre to avoid queuing traffic on the A444) - I recently observed this whilst conducting a night-time audit (10pm) when the A444 was free-flowing.
Subsequently, we are now examining the advanced direction signs as the 45 degree arrow maybe confusing drivers into thinking they have to turn left to access the hotel/ Jaguar Engineering Centre. This will be reviewed as part of the stage 3 road safety audit.
Another theory is that drivers are using their satellite navigation, and this is directing them through this junction incorrectly.
Southport Road
Roger attended a meeting with residents, council officials and the contractors who have been laying pipes on the Stonehouse Estate. The residents in Southport Road were concerned about the quality of work that was carried out. The issues raised will now be investigated by the contractors who will report back to the residents.
Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association Meeting
Roger and Pauline attended the Whitley Residents & Neighbourhood Watch Association Meeting last week where various issues were discussed by residents:
- Guest speakers at the meeting were the head teacher of Tiverton School and the chair of governors. They talked about the background of the school and the new development. They explained how much their school would want to be part of the local community.
- Two ‘surprise’ guests appeared from the company involved with the demolition of Alice Stevens & the building of the new school. A very useful discussion took place and it was felt there was good dialogue between all those present about the future of the site, including the traffic problems around the school.
- People wanted to be assured that the contractors for Whitley Business Park and the new school kept in touch with each other to ensure that the combined impact of their works on Whitley was minimised.
- Roger gave an update on the double yellow lines planned for Whitley.
- London Road Traffic calming suggestions: extra crossing points, a designated cycle lane.
Future Whitley Residents
meetings are planned for 8th June & 13th July
Grass Verges in Daventry Road
Several residents contacted Roger with respect to the overgrown grass verges in Daventry Road. After the relevant department was contacted we’re pleased to report that the grass has now been cut.
Fenside Avenue - Communal Bin
Residents reported to Roger that the lid to a large commercial waste bin at Fenside Avenue had come become detached and consequently the area smelt. It was believed that the bin crew were responsible for the damage.
Reply from Rebecca Willis, Commercial Waste Manager
Good Morning Cllr Bailey
Apologise for the delay in coming back to you with this. We refitted a lid to the bin on Wednesday so hopefully this will resolve the issue

Grass Cutting this Spring?
Good morning Roger.
I wonder if you could possibly find out what's happening with the grass cutting this spring.
It seems that the smaller areas have had one cut, but the large public open space shown on the map has not been cut at all.
It usually has a first cut around Easter time. I wasn't expecting that this year as Easter was so early, but now it's almost mid-May, and no sign of its being cut.
It is now looking very unsightly, is full of weeds and the dandelions will be seeding shortly and blowing into everyone's garden.
I hope you can find out what's happening and hopefully get the tractor mower round it.
Roger contacted the relevant department and a few days later received this.
Hi Roger.
Thank you for your reply.
I was surprised this morning to see a brand new shiny red mowing machine cutting the grass!
It will be interesting to see how often it's cut from now on. Thanks again.
