#InfrastructureMatters in Appalachia

#InfrastructureMatters...For every $1 invested in infrastructure, $2 in output is created
This week is Infrastructure Week. Across Appalachia, infrastructure enhancements are spurring economic activity and improving public health and safety. Investing in critical infrastructure—including broadband, transportation, and water systems—is one of our strategic investment goals. At ARC, we know that the most successful infrastructure investments are rooted in strong community partnerships. For instance, in Maryland, ARC is assisting the Allegany County Board of Commissioners with strengthening the area's broadband network and bringing improved services to the area's residents, businesses, and emergency services. In Madisonville, Tennessee, ARC, and the City are upgrading water meters—saving thousands of dollars in meter reading costs and providing more efficient water access to customers. In South Carolina, ARC is partnering with the City of Greenville to build a bridge along the Swamp Rabbit Trail which will enable residents to safely access the city's recreational offerings. And across Appalachia, research shows that major infrastructure projects like the Appalachian Development Highway System are having an impact on the regional and national economy.

Infrastructure matters in Appalachia because it makes us stronger.

INVESTMENTS IN ACTION

Voices of Appalachia Funders Network
"This network has become my peer network. It can be your peer network if you use it." This is the message Kim Tieman of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation offered about the Appalachia Funders Network (AFN) at their annual meeting last month in Roanoke, West Virginia. ARC is a proud partner of the Appalachia Funders Network which is leveraging partnerships, bringing investments, and building strong networks across the Region. This short video shows why their approach is working. Kudos to AFN for their leadership and vision!
Gerry Roll, of the Foundation of Appalachian Kentucky
“It's going to take all of us to make this [economic] transition and to make it a just transition,” says Gerry Roll from the Foundation of Appalachian Kentucky.
